TJ Book Babe

I've loved to read since I was a little girl. My Mom always tells I didn't want to go out & play because I always had a book in my hand. Her favorite story is how she sent me outside one day & looked out the kitchen window to see me trying to read & ride my bike. Not successfully, of course...

I love a story that's original with... more »

Just checking on you. Haven't seen you around either here or on FB. Hope you are recovering nicely.

I just saw your reply to The Glass Palace. I highly recommend it! When did your family go to Mynamar? What an experiecnce. You would probably really enjoy it with that background. Hope you and the family have a great Christmas!

I see you have The Bastard of Istanbul on your TBR. Research it very well before reading it. I just finished it and I gave it a 1. The book is billed as a story of two famiies tied together by a secret of the 1915 Armenian genocide. This is a very small plot in the book. I was SO disappointed in this book.

OK...Moloka'i is a MUST read! Absolutely beautifully written. I wrote a reveiw if you are interested. Best book I've read this year. It is one of those I'm sad to have finished because I miss the characters so much. I really want to go and read some non fiction on the subject now. Let me know if you decide to read it and share your thoughts!

The Lovely Bones: What was with possession scene where Susie comes back and has sex with her one time boyfriend? That really threw me. I was thinking "uh the creep is spying on your sister....don't you think you should either get someone to the house or better yet take the creep out?" What was with the creep's death? I get that it was foreshadowed in the "perfect murder" game but really....it was almost like Sebold realized she had run out of story and just threw the ending together. I'll have to check out The Bright Forever.

Time Traveler's Wife was a good movie. Movies are never as good as the book. At least they didn't substantially change the story. The ending was a little differnt but only in how much time elapsed for the reunion. I can accept that. It would probalby be difficult to jump ahead to when Clare is 80. I was so mad at My Sister's Keeper movie. COMPLETELY changed the ending. I'm thinking, "Hey, the book is a best seller for a REASON. We LIKE the book. Why fundamentally change the story?

I will definitely let you know about Molokai. The story sounds fascinating and some of my Shelfari friends (with similar tastes) have raved about the book.

I've not heard of the books you picked up. I will watch your shelf closely and see what you read and think. TTYL!

Yeah, I'd like to read Grapes of Wrath as well. I agree the character development in East of Eden was incredible. It was so different than Of Mice and Men.

I just finished The Lovely Bones. I saw a trailer on it when I went to see Time Traveler's Wife and thought it was an interesting premise. Take a way the narrative perspective and it is not that great of a book. I'd give it a solid three though for the creative voice she gave the work. I have started reading The Lace Reader for my face to face book club. Next will be Thomas Jefferson for my Chronological Read of AMerican History Group here on Shelfari. Then I'm moving onto Molokai. That should keep me busy (Tracy would say for a few weeks).

I'll watch for your review of the Ted Bundy book. Sounds interesting.

What other Stienbeck's have you read? I've only read Of Mice and Men and East of Eden. I really need to read more of his work because I love both of those. So what are you reading now?

Read your review of Aquarium. Like you, I will read it to get an understanding of the issues in North Korea. I search out books from other countries in an attempt to round out my view.

I see you are reading East of Eden. I LOVED it. Can't wait to see what you think.

Love talking about books. Do you like Shelfari?

I will be happy to. I don't know when I'll actually get to it. I have to finish Alexander Hamilton and next up is Lace Reader for book club. I haven't added Lace Reader yet. Guess I need to. I will remember to let you know. How is The Aquarium going?

OH....Kite Runner....one of my all time favorites! I picked it up thinking it would be centered around the current conflict. I was surprised at the depth of the story and the beautiful descriptive prose. Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? I liked Kite Runner better but appreciated the female perspective in ATSS.

If you like The Other Boylen Sister I'd say read the Queens Fool and Virgin Lover by Gregory. Queen's Fool is my favorite.

Just finished A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. It was interesting but you have to be in the right frame of mind to read it.

    Hope you are enjoying Shelfari.

I just read your review of Elephants for Water. I felt the same way. I kept picking it up and putting it down thinking I would not like it. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the historical context of the traveling circus and the story was well written.
