yes, yes, and yes. i am answering your question posted to, i'm sure, random readers with this book on their virtual shelf.
read Murakami's Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche. most definitely a fascinating read...then again, i am quite biased in all things Murakami. he is my (mostly) fictional hero.
ps-i am uber impressed by your eclectic range of books.

    Salam Dan...nice profile.

You can find below one of the reviews about Yacoubian Building novel:

"The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswamy . The book has been a best seller in its native Egypt and throughout the Arabic world since publication in 2002. Set in downtown Cairo at the time of the 1990 Gulf War, it reveals modern Egyptian life through the eyes of a diverse range of characters an aristocratic playboy, a gay newspaper editor, a religious zealot, childhood sweethearts all of whom live in the same apartment building. Cairo hasn't been so vividly - or sexily - evoked since Naguib Mahfouz's Palace Walk. " --The Guardian

I had not heard it called gift theory. In college in the dark ages, I recall it being called the norm of reciprocity. Thanks for the 411. PS I used to work in DC - I loved walking the Capitol Mall.

Dan: I got a message that you are asking about McPhee's "Uncommon Carriers," but the usual response link does not work, so I'll answer here. McPhee's writing is among my favorites. If you have not read his work, "Uncommon Carriers" is an excellent place to start. The range of subjects he has approached is phenomenal. Check the reviews on Amazon, or browse at the library or your local bookstore ("Essays" section?). This is non-fiction narrative, but truly a pleasure to read. "Oranges" is a short piece about ... oranges! Who would care? After the last page, my reaction was, "Isn't there more? Is it over?" Give McPhee a try.

Thanks for your comments on "The Open". My "to read" stack is voluminous. I need a system for moving some toward the top. I am not daunted by density - I have skimming skills. Does Shelfari have smilies?

I liked the yacoubian building. I am sure you would like it. I found a high proportion of the characters rather unattractive and it did not make me want to rush off to Egypt [by contrast with many Indian Novels for example].
Are you a farmer, microbiologist, philospher or all three?

Yes, read The Yacoubian Building. It is a well-paced narrative with interesting characters and you learn about modern Egypt, warts and all, many warts in fact.

You are the first person I have heard from on Shelfari. Seems that a lot of readers come here and don't check in again. Your bookshelf has some interesting leads in the categories of nature and travel - my favorite reading.

You posted a "Should I Read" request on Island of Dr Moreau - you've got some bio/science books in your shelf, so I say Yes. Um, what is gift theory? Was it postulated by Kris Kringle?
