Hi Linda! Happy holidays! I haven't been on Shelfari for awhile so sorry about the delayed response. I've discovered a great new website called betterworldbooks.com. It's an awesome website that lets you sell your old books, browse and buy new and used books, and helps a non-profit literacy group all in one! I haven't explored too much of it, but it looks like a great way to dispose of old books and have them go to a good cause. The website also buys certain books - and pays the shipping for you to ship it to them - so all you have to do is print a shipping label. It's pretty amazing.I am so like you. I have so many books I don't know what to do with them. I find myself going back to many of them and re-reading certain pages, looking for more details, or just reading my favorite scenes again. There are certain books I can't part with, but there are others that I'm ready to share or give away! Hope you are enjoying the holidays!
I love that scene from My Left Foot - such a great perspective! You have an excellent system of not only touching base with you kids in class, but exploring impacts, emotions, thoughts, and feelings. I like the idea of keeping a response log. I wish that I would have had something like that in school - it would have made the conversations around Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm not only more interesting, but could have explored additional thoughts and feelings by diving into areas of thought a lot of students don't ever tap into. Bravo!Well, I am off on a 2 week vacation. I have built in time to read and hope to get through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and an older book about the Jonestown Massacre in Guyana called Seductive Poison. I lived in San Francisco for 10 years and clearly remember Rep Leo Ryan's murder and the remarkable recovery and escape of his staff. Can't believe it was so long ago. Have a great couple of weeks!
Hi Linda,My sincerest apologies for taking so long to respond to your post! Thanks so much for your great comments! Yes, I do have quite an eclectic collection and wide variety of interests. I have always been an avid reader, but have struggled with finding/making the time to do it. I feel like I have finally built in quality reading time in every week. It has been quite a joy, reading some books that I have always wanted to get to! People laugh at Reader's Digest, but I will always be grateful for being introduced to it at such a young age. It opened quite a few doors for me - it sounds like RD has had an impact on you as well! I look forward to chatting some more!By the way, I'm curious if you have seen any of the movies of the books you mentioned. Generally, I am disappointed in the films after I read the books (most folks are), but I have to say that I enjoyed Cold Mountain and House of San and Fog (despite what the critics had to say!). The books will always be better to me, but I thought the film adaptations were pretty good. I am on pins and needles for The Lovely Bones this fall, but also trying to keep my film expectations in check. It is one of my all time favorite books! -Jim Wolfe
