I've been teaching at a university for a number of years and try to read casually, but it is hard as much of my work involves reading textbooks and preparing lectures. There's a renewed interest in reading that comes with the Kindle, makes tracking books easier. I've have a special interest in global health, have been to 1) Kitwe, Zambia 2)... more »

Seems like I fluctuated in my opinion of this book as I read it. There's some tangents the author goes on that eventually become distracting. While I appreciate the emphasis on grace as a theological concept and how the author is trying to communicate it, ultimately there's a need for clarity and an appreciation for the audience that is lacking. If this book is intended for searchers, perhaps the title should be amended a bit? We don't have a problem in our culture with "sinning boldly" and I don't think that is really the message the gospels proclaim. She explains it somewhat in the context of Martin Luther's personal letters, however ultimately searchers aren't acquainted with with Luther (well, maybe a few). If we are going to do the ABC's of Christianity, there needs to be a clear presentation of grace. I don't see the CLEAR part. I guess that is my point. If we are to appreciate grace, we need to appreciate the devastating impact of SIN. The author seems to "paint up" grace without the clear presentation of why we need it. There is some connection and I really appreciate what the author is trying to do. BUT, I don't think I would hand this book off to a "searcher." I am also hesitant to hand it off to a "believer."

Keeps you on your toes. Is Teddy an FBI agent? Difficult to write here without a spoiler. Very easy read, especially after seeing the film.

Good book. This points to the hope of Christians in the physical resurrection. Somewhat academic at times, but a good theology read.

Quick read, good surprise ending. Murder mystery, not a great deal of twists.

Very creative, but I don't think the theological importance of this book is a "classic" as some have claimed. The gender issue of "God" is central to the controversy in the book, as a conservative evangelical I was not as offended or confused by this character. It works in a book though, don't think in film I would be as excited so talk of a "movie" doesn't intrigue me a whole lot. There's some good concepts here, but the dominate theme is that God is approachable like a "grandma" who lays out your clothes and fixes great dinners. Don't think it addresses the holiness of God well. Not sure on the Holy Spirit as well, but I liked the plot line in general (it is linear somewhat) and it was a good read.

Fictional period novel, something I don't usually read. It has lots of characters, having a bit of a tough time keeping them straight. But, I like it so far. Each scenario is happening simultaneously throughout, so lots of plots to juggle. It is a rather long book, I'll try and finish it. The only thing I don't understand is why France and the UK and France declared war on the USA, perhaps that was in some context from the other works of the author. Since this was Book 1 of a trilogy, thought I would get the full scoop. But, that is laid out as a given. There's a context for the rise of the South , but not Britain. Oh well, I'll rate it a 3 stars for now and keep an open mind as to how I like the book when I am finished.

Time Storm 2012 had a slow pace, good read. Couldn't get too excited though as it has "clip a ways" to time storms were more outside the plot. I would like to have seen more "time storms" happen to the characters.

Fairly light reading. I enjoyed it. Part mystery, suspense and romance. A little bit of excitement toward the end of the book to find out "who dun it" and because of the pace of the plot I took my time reading it.

The story of Sophie and Josh continues from the first book the Alchemyst. If you haven't read the Alchemyst you will be lost in picking up this book.

Fiction, good read. Sophie and Josh are twins (teens) and work across the street from each other in summer jobs. Nick is the book store owner and employs 15 year old Josh. Nick is really an Alchmyst from centuries before and has a sacred book tht is sought after by others. This is a series, the next book is the Magician. There's some old world "naturalist religion" that are sometimes distracting, but it for fun and not to be taken seriously.
