I've been teaching at a university for a number of years and try to read casually, but it is hard as much of my work involves reading textbooks and preparing lectures. There's a renewed interest in reading that comes with the Kindle, makes tracking books easier. I've have a special interest in global health, have been to 1) Kitwe, Zambia 2)... more »

  • Settling Accounts Return Engagement (Settling Accounts Trilogy)
    • Rated 3 stars

Fictional period novel, something I don't usually read. It has lots of characters, having a bit of a tough time keeping them straight. But, I like it so far. Each scenario is happening simultaneously throughout, so lots of plots to juggle. It is a rather long book, I'll try and finish it. The only thing I don't understand is why France and the UK and France declared war on the USA, perhaps that was in some context from the other works of the author. Since this was Book 1 of a trilogy, thought I would get the full scoop. But, that is laid out as a given. There's a context for the rise of the South , but not Britain. Oh well, I'll rate it a 3 stars for now and keep an open mind as to how I like the book when I am finished.

  • Time Storm 2012: Atlantis and the Mayan Prophecy

Time Storm 2012 had a slow pace, good read. Couldn't get too excited though as it has "clip a ways" to time storms were more outside the plot. I would like to have seen more "time storms" happen to the characters.

Fairly light reading. I enjoyed it. Part mystery, suspense and romance. A little bit of excitement toward the end of the book to find out "who dun it" and because of the pace of the plot I took my time reading it.

  • The Magician

The story of Sophie and Josh continues from the first book the Alchemyst. If you haven't read the Alchemyst you will be lost in picking up this book.

Fiction, good read. Sophie and Josh are twins (teens) and work across the street from each other in summer jobs. Nick is the book store owner and employs 15 year old Josh. Nick is really an Alchmyst from centuries before and has a sacred book tht is sought after by others. This is a series, the next book is the Magician. There's some old world "naturalist religion" that are sometimes distracting, but it for fun and not to be taken seriously.

    The Colorado Sequence

    by Stacey Cochran
    • Rated 3 stars

The Colorado Sequence is somewhat of a cross between sci-fi and a thriller. It is about a professor who has a gift for precognitive awareness and sort of enters the metaphysical realm.

  • Lord of All: Developing a Christian World-and-Life View

by Jerry Newcombe D. James Kennedy
    • Rated 3 stars

The writing is a bit more casual here, at times seems a bit abrasive. But, I understand why and there are times where a bit more pointed approach is needed. Very interesting read, probably not a book for seekers.

  • Because He Loves Me: How Christ Transforms Our Daily Life
    • Rated 5 stars

Elyse is very practical in her writing. She focuses on the love of Christ and how it transforms our lives... " If we fail to remember our justification, redemption, and reconciliation, we'll struggle in our sanctification. If you look at your life and it seems as though your growth has been at a standstill, if you don't see that your faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love have grown in measurable ways.." She reminds us that we've been loved and welcomed by the only Person whose opinion really matters - Christ. We don't need to earn that love nor do we need to look to others to find one that loves us so deeply.

  • The Life You've Always Wanted
    • Rated 5 stars

Very practical book on Christian Living. John points out that "God does not intend that guidance be a shortcut to escape making decisions and taking risks." God wants us to develop good judgment, and there is no way to develop it apart from a process that involves choices and risks.

  • Mere Christianity

C.S. Lewis was an outstanding author. The frankness on topics is remarkable, given the time this was written. His candor lends credibility, it is a book that one can quite frankly share with anyone - even those without Christian leanings.
