Really interesting book dealing with the author's journey to train for and win the U.S. memory championship. Also delves into memory aberrations: amnesia due to brain damage, remembering too much, synesthesia; and what it means to be a savant.

Suspenseful espionage novel about a mystery writer becoming involved in a real mystery. It made me think of "Our Man in Havana."

This is a wonderful book to reread at Christmas time. It's filled with classic characters and has a feel good ending. It's not possible for me to think of it without having Alistair Sim as Scrooge come to mind. I also end up thinking of Miss Piggy sneaking food while cooking in the Muppet Christmas Carol.

I listened to this with my son as a book on tape in the car. I kept having to rewind. But I have a lot of admiration for the author.

  • A Walk in the Woods

A mostly hilarious account of preparing for and hiking the Appalachian Trail. There is a great section when the author suspects he has contracted hypothermia.

Memorable quote: "He put the gun down."

My son's first chapter book, given to him for a 5th(?) birthday gift by my good friend Patti. Lots of fun details about the differences in daily life in the UK vs. the US. I enjoyed reading it and learning the soccer terms.

The characters in this story of a school shooting were more believable than those in Witness by Anita Shreve. Jodi Picoult gives a good sense of a girl struggling with fitting in, dealing with the popular crowd and an unpopular longtime friend whom they bully. She is torn about her relationship with an abusive, handsome athlete.

This was an enjoyable Venetian mystery with the elegant Commissario Brunetti on the case.
