Misanthropic curmudgeon and book addict. It's a rare day that I can pass a second-hand book shop without succumbing to the sirens call of a tatty paperback - hence the number of unread books on my shelf (if only I could read them at the same rate I buy them).
Tastes:
- Fiction over non-fiction
- I generally prefer my fiction to be conceptual (http://www.conceptualfiction.com/notes_on_conceptual_fiction), which covers a lot of speculative or science fiction, fantastic fiction and horror fiction - although I'd argue that any conceptually strong literary fiction which is strongly metaphorical or fable-like (The Magus and/or Animal Farm) should also be included
- Brains over brawn or beauty - in people and in books, although beauty/style in books is good too
- Novels over all other storytelling forms, although I do like short fiction and films a lot too
Favourite authors: HP Lovecraft, Michael Moorcock, Kafka, Graham Green, Patrick Hamilton, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K Dick, Mervyn Peake, John Fowles and Daphne du Maurier - although some of these are relatively new 'discoveries' by me so I've not necessarily read everything by them by an means. With my Fave books I've limited myself to one book per author, so as not to get out of hand. Favourite book, of course, has nothing to do with quality: just what I like most. I'll probable try to round it off to a neat hundred books at some point.
First impressions of Shelfari are good. I haven't really explored the 'networking' side of things yet, other than join a few groups, but I will do. So if you're reading my profile then why not say hello. As a bookshop owner said to me once: 'the evil-ones don't read.' Obviously he didn't have the Nazis in mind when he said this, but as a rough guide to life it doesn't seem that far off the mark.
Cheers
