I loved Edgar Sawtelle...missed most of the references to Hamlet and just became engrossed in the story. I actually read the whole book twice because I am in a bookclub. Just meant to skim it the second time but loved reading every word again. I bought it as gifts for my teen age grandsons. Enjoy
wow you have a collection of interesting books. I loved the Life of Pi and she's come undone. how are you? I need Lisa and Danny's address - I am sending them a "future girl scout" onesy
That's interesting! I just bought "Olive Kitteridge." I am taking a trip soon and plan to read it on the plane. Now I'm looking forward to it!
"The Elegance of the Hedgehog" is a wonderful little book -- full of interesting characters, and a well conceived plot. I think you will like it.
I do like this site! It sort of keeps my books logged when I keep up with it but it is a valuable source for recommendations. Let me know how Olive is. I have heard great things about it. I keep thinking one of my book clubs will choose it.
I don't ever remember saying I would read Animal Dreams!!!!Barbara Sender is going to join this group. Try to make her feel welcome!!!Love, JK
Sue - I LOVED The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire. I cannot wait for the 3rd one although it will be the final one. I did read Olive Kitteridge and I really liked it. Let me know what you think. The short stories do not necessarily get resolved but so many things in life don't - especially when you just peek into a brief period in one's life. I gave up on South of Broad too - same reasons. I did read That Old Cape Magic - I have always like Richard Russo. This wasn't his best book but entertaining enough! I am reading White Tiger and The Concubine's Children now. Just got Day After Night by Anita Diamant from the library and need to get that finished because the book is in demand.
Glad you liked the book Mom! I have seen so many people walking around reading it, that I figured it had to be at least decent. Looking forward to reading it! Love you xoxo
Perfect, Sue. The Grapes of Wrath was one of my favorites, too. I love to find out the "why's" as well. So, you were helpful. If i can't get the club to pick up on it, then I'll just read it on my own and let you know!
Hey Sue, when you have a moment, tell me why you scored The Worst Hard Time a four. I've had it on my shelf for a couple of years and want to recommend to book club, but want to make sure it is the right book for discussion. We typically love historical books and I think it would be a great choice. I also notice you recently added The Shadows of the Wind. My book club read that before I joined, and they STILL talk about it being one their favorite. Guess I should pick that one up as well!have a great day Sue.
Hi Sue....love your book shelf. Fun memories of reads when you were available for book club. Thanks for telling me about this site. I will try to stay in tune. mb
Hi Ma - Brett read The Book Thief and said it was good - he read it a while ago so can't remember if he loved it, but said it was a good read.

Oh, i visited Gettysburg after reading Killer Angels. Standing on Little Roundtop on the right (or left?) flank...was really something. Plus I made my family listen to it on tape, then read it again. One that you might really like, is Widow of the South. It is based on a true story and still in the Civil War genre but from a different perspective than Killer Angels.
Welcome to Better than Starbucks! Look around, make yourself at home, start a new thread or dig up an old one or just read and jump in on the more active ones.We are honored to be one of your first groups!
Wow Sue! We have so many of the same books!! You must be my twin! I loved Olive Kitteridge and the Art of Racing in the Rain. I am making my whole family read that one. I have The Killer Fields on my to read list. Loved the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the Worst Hard Time. Someone just recommended Sarah Dunant as an author to me.
You are right. I had such high hopes for this book but I have to say I am disappointed with it. I can't attach to any of the characters. Not much of a plot (I have read about 250 pages). I have put it down and finished a couple of other books in the meantime. Don't know if I will pick it back up again or not.
Thanks, Sue. I still like yours better! :)
