I am a 60 (nearly) year old single English woman living in Thailand. I've been here nearly four years and planning on returning home when I can afford to do so. I have a BAHon in Imaginative Writing and Theatre Studies and a MA in Writing. I also have a teaching certificate and other lesser qualifications.
There are no libraries here so I rely on friends, neighbours, the book swap and some book shops to get my reading material. Bangkok has the biggest selection of books in the Japanese run Kinokinuya at Paragon Centre, which I love, but I am 250 km away so don't get there very often.
I am put off books that are over three hundred pages because I think most of them are waffle. I have an eclectic taste but his year my resolution was to read as many Nora Roberts as I could. I think she is a great story teller.
I have read so many books over the years and now I choose to buy women writrers first. I am rather tired of gritty, realist fiction, all action gung-ho adventure stuff. If I find a book too gruesome I won't read it and I don't buy more from that author - male or female. But you're missing some great writers, I hear people say. Well, yeah, reading that stuff made me miss so many great female writers over the years, so tough. I'm catching up.
