Hi, I've been a book lover since I was a child and still read a variety of books as often as I can. I've been happily married 31 years, love my children and my grandsons. I read all kinds of books and love talking about books and recommending them to people. I am retired from owning a small local business. My husband is retired from the Army... more »

Yes, I really liked it. I passed it on to Corinne on Christmas Eve, and it is probably going to be my pick for book club next time it's my turn to host.

I am reading Cannery Row right now. So far, not too impressed with it - I guess I find it a bit slow.

They had a book review of it in The Tennessean, and I like reading books by local authors. Thought I'd give it a try and see if it was any good.

Also, I finished your Mormon polygamy book, Shattered Dreams. I guess overall I liked learning about her life and that whole religious lifestyle, but I sure did just want to shake her a few times! Did Laurissa want me to send that one to her, or just the one on Henrietta Lacks? I'm pretty sure no one in my bookclub would be interested in it, and I hate not to keep passing it along if someone else would like to read it. (I'm afraid it has too much sexual content to share with Gail!)

Thanks for the advice on that. I may still give it a read, but I think I've dropped it down on my priority list. Once I finish up CeeCee I'm going to try to focus on some of those books you gave me, especially that one about the town in WWII. I think my dad will enjoy it as well, so I want to try to hurry and finish it so I can take it next time I go down to Arab.

Just read your review and I am disappointed that the book turned out to be only mediocre. Maybe I will still try to read it, but at least I won't have my expectations set very high.

I just finished the Jane Austen Book Club and couldn't even give it 3 stars. It was one of the most boring books I've ever read. I guess I'm just not a true Jane Austen fan.

I am a little over halfway through with Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. Nothing to change the world, but some good Southern eccentrics and a few really funny pages involving garden slugs and a pancake flipper. It was our bookclub selection for last month that I didn't finish, but everyone that read it through seemed to like it and get a kick out of some of the sub-plots.

It looks good from the description, but you nebba know. I'm still struggling thru The Jane Austen Book Club. Only slightly more interesting than when I talked to you last week.

Well, you didn't miss a whole lot by giving up on Gypsy. I finally finished the trilogy of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo etc - I felt like they kind of dropped off a little in each one in terms of quality and keeping my interest, but I really enjoyed the series as a whole and loved having it all wrapped up in a nice little bow at the end.

I was pretty disappointed with it. I didn't hate it, but I just felt like there were so many holes in Gypsy's history (by her design) that it was hard to really gain any insight. Not what I would consider a real biography by any stretch.

I should have guessed at the Sheila/Cecelia/Celia connection, but it never occurred to me! And I think that's a fine reason to want a grandchild with the name. You know how I love everybody having a reason for their name and a solidifying family connection.

And Celia is a lovely name. I've never actually known any Celias, but if they're all as funny as this author I think I'd like to.

I'm thinking that "We're Just Like You, Only Prettier", the one I just finished, is so far my favorite. It actually had one story in it that made me cry and showed me that not only is Miz Rivenbark a good comic writer, but she's got some depth as well. And she spoke more than once of the abomination of putting sugar on your grits!

I am laughing out loud again at Celia Rivenbark. This is the 3rd one of her books I've read, thanks to your recommendation. Haven't started EoE yet. I hope to get going on it this week and then watch the movie version when I'm finished. I've never seen it and wanted to read the book first.

I just finished reading "The Bean Trees". It was okay. Really quick read and the main characters are from Kentucky so there was some Southern humor in it.

I would definitely recommend the book, for you at least. I thought it was well written with an unusual setting/subject matter, and I enjoyed all the little twists in the plot (no pun intended). My club seems to be big fans of this author, though I did not personally jump up and down about the last book of his we read. We have our monthly PFC on Sunday so I'll let you know if the rest of them are as jazzed about this one as I am. (We're a lot closer in age-range than your group, so I'm not sure if that affects the opinions or our book selections.)

I was actually in Milwaukee all last week for training and meeting my new team. Not much snowfall while I was there, but it was wicked cold! I went on Thursday morning and it was -15 - and that was not windchill. I'm sure you don't miss dealing with all that. Even with 8" of snow, you know it will be gone soon.

That was generally our opinion as well - not nearly as funny as the title lead us to believe, and a real downer at the end.

I have to say that I just consumed "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and am waiting with bated breath to get the next one in the series. I really was prepared to hate it because I had heard from several people that it was so difficult to read and they couldn't keep all the characters straight, and I thought it was going to be much "darker" than it was. But I found it was one of the most interesting mysteries I have ever read, lots of twists and turns, and even the gross parts didn't just go on and on. So either I am smarter than all these other people because I had no trouble with the cast of characters, or I just liked it so much because the main character (Salander) reminded me so much of my friend Sandy.

Haven't started yet. I'll start it this week. I'm in the middle
of Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. Really enjoying it. Can't
wait to read the sequel to it. What are you thinking of our
    book?

Don't worry that I have been offended at writers group. Everyone is very nice. I've just gotten rather bored with it, and the new location gives me the creeps. I think that perhaps I attended all those years simply as one more excuse to hang out at coffee and a Good Book. I really liked that place. But, back to being bored; I think I'm simply bored with myself, not everyone else. I don't write anything anymore, and I've read about all that is readable in the Sunday school class setting of readers group.

I have read all but the most recent of the Evanovich series. I like the Dirk Pitt adbentures by Clive Cussler better than his newer ones.
