Well, I'm about half way thru Dahlia....it is written in a rather...'did this, then that' sort of way. But once it hooks you, it is hard to put down. It is dark and disturbing, really revealing the ugly underbelly of LA during the 40s. The language is rough and the whole city was corrupt..bordering on evil. It is a sadly true glimpse at a very immoral time in history. I like true crime/mystery so I like it pretty well, but it is very dark. Will let you know more when I finish it. Have a good weekend.

    Hi Laurie,

I think the American title is 'There Is No Place Like Here', you might find it under that name. It's my first book by Cecilia Ahern and I'm pleasantly surprised; it is very well written and I really enjoy it. The story so far is about a woman who as a child became obsessed with finding things now runs a missing persons agency. She herself goes missing and finds herself in a mystical place where all lost things and missing people end up. It's an unusual idea and I'm looking forward to see how it ends.

There's just something about that post WWII 'mood' or 'style' that appeals to me! :) Well, too bad for Three Cups of Tea...I'll ask around at my book club and see what they think. I'll keep you posted on Black Dahlia. Take care. :)

Well, I'm only on Chp. 5 and the type is different, kinda small and not my favorite to read. So far it has just set the stage and introduced some of the main characters. So, I don't know how I will like it, although I really love a good murder mystery. Kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Plus my husband and I both have a thing for the Post WWII 40s-50s ear. Not sure why, but we do. Have you seen the TV series 'Ad Men'? It has that same flare. We even have some home decor from that era. I guess we're just weird! :) As I go on, I will keep you posted on what I think about the book.

Thanks for the friend add. Wow, 76 books in common. That's quite a bit. I see you are reading Three Cups of Tea, what do you think so far? I have been thinking about adding it to my 'to read' list. Have a great weekend. :)

Larsson's book is worth at least one read. However, I'm going to be totally honest (because I say what I think, always, when I read a book and I'm not one of those readers that loves every book read)--it's a slow read. The beginning and the end of the book drags...the middle, the one part of the book that truly deals with Harriet Vanger, her disappearance and apparent murder, is quite interesting, however, so that in itself makes the book worth the read. But, I did find myself at times bored with an alternate plot that was thrown in there, which only shadowed the main theme, I think. There are some scenes that could be deemed rather strong (they deal with rape), but unless you're a truly sensitive person, I think it can be well handled.

I'm really enjoying 'The Secret History of the Pink Carnation.' The historical details are not 100% correct, but that's alright. It's a novel, and a fun but not totally light read, with some intriguing adventure, which is making me quite addicted to the book. It's also the first in a series of so far 6 novels (the 6th one to be released in 2010).

Like I said in the Kindle thread in the other group, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the nook once you've received it. I do like it quite a bit (which is interesting, because so far I haven't been even interesting in browsing the benefits of any of these devices). Though I think I'll wait a tad for the price to go down before seriously thinking of purchasing it.

Christmas gifting oneself is the best thing ever. I highly recommend it, lol

I don't. Do you? I'm not exactly wild about the need to have one or the other, so even if I do get one in the future, I'll be fine waiting a bit.

'One For the Money' is the first in the series, no? I'm the type who enjoys reading books that are in a series, in order.

Have you read the Dresden Files? Or Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series of books? Those two choices, along with Evanovich's Plum series are the finalists in what books I'll buy as the gifts to myself for Christmas. I'm still not sure what one series to choose.

I saw it too! I remember being beyond excited when I found out that it was going to be passing by Miami--I'm a big art history fan, and the exhibit had priceless treasures. I have a replica of King Tut's throne from that visit to the museum, plus a huge history book with amazing illustrations. Ah...ancient Egypt!

Fantastic! I hope you'll enjoy them as I hope to enjoy them. Now I just have to get all the books for November read so I can get to December's batch.

I haven't yet, but I really want to. Have you read it?

I've only read one Patterson book ('The Jester') and I wasn't totally crazy about it, but now I've started 'The Murder of King Tut.' So I don't have that much to go on in order to say whether I like his books or not. But I do agree with you that he writes fast and easy reads. I'm enjoying 'King Tut' so far.

Never read him before, but his books sound like they're great. I have a feeling I'm going to be laughing a bit when I get to the choice for my Christmas reading list.

    You're a Patterson fan then?

So far in my Christmas reading list I have:

'The Stupidest Angel' by Christopher Moore
'Visit from St. Nicholas' by Victoria Alexander
'A Very Gothic Christmas' by Christine Feehan and Melanie George
'The Christmas Clock' by Kat Martin
'Santa in a Stetson' by Janet Dailey
'The Snow Bride' and 'The Perfect Christmas' by Debbie Macomber
And the very infamous 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens...which I have actually never before read.
