  • The Book of Tomorrow
    • Rated 3 stars

When spoiled rich girl Tamara Goodwin's father commits suicide she and her mother are left with nothing and have to go live in the country with family members who are decidedly odd. While dealing with grief and a mother who is barely functional, Tamara starts to question the secrecy of her aunt. The discovery of a blank book helps her unfold the mystery surrounding the family.

The book had an interesting premise and plot. I thought I had figured out the "mystery" fairly early in the book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was only partially right. Unfortunately the characters were not as "real" as in other Ahern books, keeping it from being any more than a fun story.

  • The Sensationally Absurd Life and Times of Slim Dyson
    • Rated 3 stars

Slim dyson is optimistic, happy, surrounded by friends and (in his mind) a successful writer. He just happens to live in the local homeless shelter and on the street. When by a chance of fate he becomes an internet sensation and is relocated to LA his life view is challenged.

I was hoping for a story with an inspirational view of "the simple life", but Slim was more delusional than deep and the fish out of water scenario in LA was tragically predictable. The humor in the writing kept this cute story from being a total loss.

  • House Rules

House Rules was a very readable story that gave great perspective into some of the challenges faced by a person with Aspergers. I was extremely frustrated, however, by the plot wrap up - while the "who did it" seemed blatantly obvious to me from very early on, the book waited until the absolute last minute to present it and try to tie up loose ends in an extremely rushed fashion.

  • The Woman Who Died A Lot
    • Rated 5 stars

The best Thursday next in years! Despite being forced into a semi-quiet life, Thursday continues to be caught up in the battle for literature and against Goliath - and of course saving the city.

I, for one, am thrilled that that the Chronoguard has been shut down because it brought the series back to a level of insanity I can wrap my mind around.

  • The Great Influenza
    • Rated 2 stars

An interesting read, full of information. I was continually surprised at how impersonal a book could be while telling the stories of individuals, though. The title was also a bit of a misnomer in that the story doesn't successfully focus on the flu epidemic. The lack of focus created an at times rambling account which jumped back and forth through decades and across continents leaving the whole rather disjointed.

Great exploration of emotions - love, grief, jealously. I listened to Audible's narration by Colin Firth and it was really well done.

  • A Long, Long Sleep
    • Rated 5 stars

Sixteen-year-old Rosalinda Fitzroy wakes up from stasis (think life pause chamber) to find that over 60 years have passed, during which society has gone through a new dark ages and UniCorp, the company her parents ran (and she has now inherited), runs everything – on this planet and others. In the midst of adjusting to a world that has changed and the knowledge that her parents’ company was in large part responsible for the dark times, Rosalinda finds she is the target of a robotic assassin who has been waiting for his “target” to appear for decades and is programmed to avoid detection by UniCorp

Somehow through all of this there is also a very real, personal narrative as Rose comes to grip with who her parents were, the way she was raised, and finds her own strength and voice in the process.

    Best. Dresdon. Yet.

All the detail and buildup of the first books completely paid off.

  • File M for Murder (Cat in the Stacks Mystery)
    • Rated 4 stars

Maybe I'm just sentimental since my cat died this summer, but I think this is the best in the series so far. LOVE thay cat and an ending that doesn't insult the reader's intelligence
