I m a book addict, a baking enthusiast and a cat lover. I feel uncomfortable when I leave the house without a book...I feel the need to read if ever I have a few free minutes, such as waiting in line at the grocery store. I will read nearly anything, but I have a particular interest in non-fiction, memoirs, and history. I also enjoy spending... more »

Through some diabolical glitch at Shelfari I ended up with TWO accounts and could only sign in to the newly created one. So I've had to transfer all of my books and, more or less, start from scratch. In the process I've also lost all of my "friends" and "followers". I've tried to get Shelfari to correct the situation to no avail. They keep referring me to Amazon and the Amazon "help" people claim never to have heard of Shelfari. Hope you'll continue to "follow" me at my new location. Gunter

I would like to suggest reading THE ENDLESS HOUR- The True Story of a Haunted Soul.I completed publication
    in November 2010.

Over eighteen years in the making,THE ENDLESS HOUR is about an illustration I created in 1988 that became
reality two years later, which involves a spiritual death experience.

This touching and terrifying true story is not only about me.It is also about... you.

For more information go to theendlesshour.com. Once you enter the website you can watch the book video and
read reviews. You may also want to visit amazon.com and read the first seven chapters of THE ENDLESS HOUR.

    Thanks,
    Jesse

What an utterly beautiful icon picture - but if this is still a young child perhaps you might rethink posting the picture on the internet. For her security.

Hi Brittany - how you've been? I just wanted to let you know we're seeking nominations for the quarterly read in the History Non-Fiction group. Please feel free to nominate something...the quarter doesn't begin until July so there's a bit of time to decide. Just wanted to let you know since you were one of the folks who replied that you were open to the idea.

I did like it, not so much for the story which I found disturbing and slightly terrifying, but because of its place in literary history. I also think it has some interesting themes, not the least of which is the absence of history. I dearly love history and one of the reasons I believe history should not be lost is because human nature is such that to forget history is to repeat some of the despicable behavior of the past. Slavery, for example, is America's greatest shame in my opinion. The Holocaust is Germany's. People think that sort of thing couldn't possibly happen again, but I would argue that not much has changed and we could easily fall into such a trap again. I think Orwell brought that out really well...people just "went along" and then it was too late to fight it.

It was also interesting to me that it appeared at times he was using Nazi Germany as the model rather than the Communists but let's face it, they weren't much different. And I find THAT interesting because the Nazis were far right and the Communists were far left and yet, they ruled in much the same way - with an iron fist. Extremism is a bad thing no matter what side of politics you're on...and yes, now I've drifted into American politics.

I had to laugh when someone in the 1001 Book Group (I think his name was Jason) said this book was indicative of George Bush II. Now that I've finished, I really need to go back and ask him exactly what in this book reminded him of George Bush because it is all about what I'll call extreme socialism and whether you liked George Bush or hated him, one thing you couldn't call him is a socialist or even a man with socialist leanings. Our current President, on the other hand, has all the leanings and he does tend to worry me when he can't even take a bad newspaper review.

Whew...thanks for asking...the questions that get posted rarely allow you to really say what you think about a book so I'm glad I got the chance to speak. What do you like about the book?

I think you should read it.
It's not an 'eye-opener' or anything. I really expected it to be heavy, bur for a serious subject, it's very light and is funny in places too.
