I love this site! It's so helpful to get reminded of books I've read and find out about new books. Being a French teacher for 23 years (along with Spanish and English), I obviously love the masters along with world literature, non fiction and great historical and contemporary novels (not so much pulp fiction or vampires). I really appreciate... more »

I did try to start it a couple of weeks ago. I can tell I will like it but at that time I wasn't too focused. I'll let you know what I think when I finally do sink my teeth into it.

    Merry Christmas!

I more than loved The Book Thief. I actually was a little surprised that it is a YA book. High school I can definitely see but I have a 12 year old nephew and I'm not certain if WWII has been covered in school yet. I almost got it for him on his birthday but have decided to wait until 15.

I agree! I see you've added The Madness of a Seduced Woman. I read that book years ago, and then re-read it, because I loved it so much. Another favorite of mine, which is similar I guess, is Fortune's Rock (I've also read twice). Both of these books are favorites of my daughters as well (both in their forties). For me, the theme is always about yearning.

No similarities except I think they are both way overated. The Cantos make The Wasteland look like A Child's Garden of Verses. And the anti-Semititism made me nauseated. This may sometimes be overlooked because readers don't get that far. It took a lot of effort to get through it for both reasons.
I am listening to Tropic of Cancer on my iPod. I halfway. It is getting easier but, yes, it is also nauseating -- the worldview and attitudes toward women.

    Hi Mishelle,

So very glad to see you enjoyed The Secret History. I'm thinking of re-reading it again sometime soon. I wish she'd write another. I did try The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and it seemed like it was going to be good but all of a sudden I lost interest. HONESTLY, if it's translated I have problems! Argh!

Well, I guess I liked it enough to buy his next book The Girl Who Play with Fire; I bought it this past weekend ;o). It's supposed to be better. No don't skip it. I thought the Potato Peel was good, but for that type of book epistolary? I think they call it?? I much preferred 84 Charing Cross Road. That book is is a favorite of mine. I also loved the movie staring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft.

I see you are reading The Secret History. I too have read it, actually a long time ago and loved it. I stole a selection from your shelf - Hunger, as I'm very into translated words lately, especially Norwegian authors, and German, and Spanish, oh well all of them I guess. I love Stefan Zweig, ever read him?? Thanks for wanting to be my friend - I look forward to a new source for book selections.
