I usually feel guilty for immersing myself into a good book because I feel like there are other, more important things that I should be doing. Anyone in favour of an eight day week, three of which make up a weekend?

I had to be early at the Embassy in Grosvenor Square this morning. By the time I left the shops still weren't open, so I walked down by the Grovenor Chapel and along Curzon Street past Heywood Hill's. I con only admire their books through the widow! Grrrrr! I breakfasted at The Wolseley reading Admiral Beaufort's biography. By Berry & Rudd's were open, so the only possible reading was a wine label!

Well.................. I think the Independent New Book shops are few now........... I guess the price margins and rents are beating them. I knew one named Browsers at Stoneygate that closed relatively recently. There are a few shops that pretend to be bookshops/cafes. However they have very few books - there's one near where I live and I only went in once. I know a few shops that seem to be able to mix new and secondhand books - Scarthin Books at Cromford would be one - it has a good tea-room also. Daunt's is independent, I guess - however it's quite large. Persephone presses on against the odds..........

    Do you like H.E.Bates?

A London 'Village' that I quite like to have lunch or afternoon tea in is Primrose Hill. There is good 'new' bookshop there, however it always has a shelf of second-hand books out the front. The Russian Tea-Rooms and Ian Makin's are worth stopping a while in!

Actually, my favourite bookstore in London is of course, Heywood Hill.

The Lambs Conduit Persephon Shop has lecture, book discussions etc. Worth going. Shame they closed the Kensington Persephone recently.

You have the Persephone edition of MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAYon your shelf. When in London I often visit their office in Lamb's Conduit. Did you see the film of this book? I thought it was great - slightly offline, but great!

It's been a long time since I read any of Alan garner's books. The thing I most remember of them is their atmosphere........ quietly surreal, misty? Sometimes if I have to go to Manchester Airport, I drive back over Alderly Edge. In the fog (or cloud on the ground), it always seems an other-worldy place.........
I looked at the book 1,000 ARTIST TRADING CARDS that you'ved recently added. I guess there are only two ways to have your Visiting Card - minimalist, engraved black-on-white or over-the-top, grab the recipient's attention. Anthing between makes you a plumbers-merchant sales-man, handing round his card at dinner-parties! I subscribe to a magazine named VICTORIA which has published a book of business-cards and whenever I see a Design Book with this theme, it catches my attention. Mine are minimalilst, by the way!
