I am 50 something years old and live in western Pa.,(all my life). I work full time in retail so sometimes it is hard to find time to read as much as I would like. I love books pretaining to real life events or situations. I am a dog lover and have a wonderful norwich terrier named sparky. I am also a grandma to a wonder grandson, Owen 1 1/2 yr... more »

Just read your note... Yes, I did love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I'm a sucker for books that involve children as the main character and/or different periods of history, so I thought it was great. Reminded me in some ways of Angela's Ashes, which I also loved.

Merry Christmas to you too! I did read the first two, but the person who loaned me the third book said it was her least favorite, so I'm having some motivation problems but trying to plow through.

My favorite Amy Tan book would probably be The Kitchen God's Wife.

That was pretty much the opinion of all the people in my book club. I did LOVE Cane River...I read it right after reading THE HELP which was also very very good!

You asked about comedy - how about the Dead-End Job series? I think the first one is "Shop Til You Drop" by Elaine Viets. I always get a good laugh out of these.

You will have to let me know what you thought about The Reliable Wife. We read it for book club and had quite an interesting discussion about it!

I finished reading Sarah's Key last night (about 3:00 am). What a horrible story, poor Sarah and poor Julia. I agree with you about Julia's husband!!

Hi Patti! I'm always glad to have more friends on here with similar tastes in books. Even though I have a large stack of books that I haven't had a chance to read yet, I am always looking for more... it's an addiction :)

No, I had never read anything about this. I am just barely into the book - Julia has just been to a dinner party (2002) and met Guillaume. That isn't very far into it at all. A long time friend of mine from Indiana recommended this book to me last year. I bought it in May 2009 and am just getting around to reading it. Actually, it was after I saw that you were reading it, too.

Hi Patti. I haven't started reading Fragile Beasts yet, but I'll let you know how I like it when I'm done. I've read Backroads many years ago and enjoyed it, so I think I'll like this book also. Currently I'm reading Shanghai Girls. We do seem to have a lot of the same tastes in books. Jodi Picoult is my favorite author. I look forward to discussing some good books with you in the future!

I make bags (for fun) and chose Bee Bag Lady as my label. My real first name means "bee", so I like using it as my symbol. I also have a new grandson, Benjamin, born March 10.

She's Come Undone was an Oprah Pick a long time ago. I read it then and I really enjoyed it. I am about finished with the 3rd of the Bride Quartet books (fun romance) and have just barely started South of Broad. I will probably read a short Scumble River mystery in between.

Maybe South of Broad or Sarah's Key. I'm sorry about my error in my last mail to you - I have read Key for Rebecca (Follett) a long time ago. Have you read Madonnas of Leningrad? Can's remember if I asked you that or not. It was really a good story (Russian) and very short.
What are you planning on for your next read?

I own Rebecca's Key and The Help (unread and in the TBR stack). I have read Boy in the Stripped Pajamas (very good) and Water for Elephants (I think I liked it). Thanks for the suggestions - I am also currently reading Burning Wire by Jeffery Deaver - good so far.

Hi Patti! I wish that I was reading House Rules as often as I wanted to but, as a kindergarten teacher at this time of year, there is not a whole lot of time.....I am on chapter 4 and really like it so far but I generally like her books. Ironically, I am also listening (on a Playaway) to Jodi's "Change of Heart". My kids started soccer this week and I am on the soccer field 4 nights a week. It seems really good too. My book club read Handle With Care. Seems like I have read quite a bit of her stuff....I really have never been disappointed. I have never read Mercy but maybe I will put it on my list!

    Hi, Patti M.,

You asked about reading Sarah's Key. I like a lot of the books you have on your shelf, so I would give you a qualified yes, but I want you to know that it is extremely sad and has a lot of tragedy in it, while being moving and beautifully written. I was glad I read it but it wasn't easy. Another I think I liked even better that you might like if you have not read it was Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. Write back if you like, I love book talk. Warmly,
    Julia in sunny New York
