I saw that you read and loved The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I have started reading a book
called Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. It has a different naration style but the themes and story are similar. I am having trouble putting it down to do other things.
Its worth having a look at in the library or your local book shop.

    Happy Reading

My nine year old granddaughter isn't allowed to watch TV, but she is allowed to watch DVDs upon occasion. Gnomeo and Juliette is her favorite.

I was fascinated by Law and Order because there were so many variants on the air for so many years.

Can you imagine how difficult it must have been for the writers to find new crimes for each week's script? In my book these brave souls were right up there with the people who convinced Disney to remake Romeo and Juliet using animated lawn ornaments.

I'm back. It was good fun and I got to visit my daughter and granddaughter and scores of my favorite books, now residing with my daughter.

As a bonus, when I travel, I can watch TV in motels (Law and Order is off the air, who knew?) and eat at McDonald's (a great treat since the closest McDonald's to the farm is 60 miles away in another country).

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford has been chosen as the Good Reads selection for December-January. The discussion should be posted shortly after the first week of the month.

In the meantime, you all are still discussing Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I, on the other hand, am about to drive to Atlanta to visit my daughter and granddaughter, and compete in a Thanksgiving Day half marathon race. I'm taking several books (about fifteen pounds worth) with and I'll post when I can.

Hi, Jill! Yes, it's always good news that Sue Grafton has another coming out. I really hope she makes it through the whole alphabet! I wonder if she'll retire at that point, or think up another series. I notice you like Alexander McCall Smith, too. I'm only one behind on the Ladies' Detective series, but really need to catch up on the other ones. I'm currently listening to The Double Comfort Safari Club on CD, and I like the reader a lot, except with her accent, she doesn't seem to pronounce the "s" at the end of words!

Thanks Jill . . . I've been on the waiting list for it at the library for some time. One of my New Year's resolutions for 2011 was not to purchase any books for myself . . . ugh. I figured I usually spend between $600-$750 a year on books, almost never look at them again and give most of them away when I am finished. Most of what I read is EVENTUALLY available at the public library, which my husband likes to remind me, we do pay for, it makes good sense. The pitfall, I can't always get books when I want them. I should have Vagrants by early next week and if I finish it quickly will be able to join in the discussion for September. I've already read the October nominee! The best part of the resolution, it now gives my husband something to buy as gifts! I keep a list (rather short) of the few books I read that I do wish to own. I'll let you know about Doc when I get my hands on it. What did you think about Vagrants? If you haven't read it, I just finished A Paris Wife. Light but enjoyable and an interesting take on Hemingway's life.

Excellent! I really like the looks of that first book but it doesn't look like it's very available. One copy used on Amazon?

You're right. We will enjoy the tomatoes this winter, but fall is such a busy time. Our tomatoes just started to ripen last week and we have already had frost warnings.

Bless you, I'm knee deep in marinara. Pamela planted sixty tomatoes this spring then left for Georgia before the tomato tsunami arrived.

The fantasy was Wise Man's Fears and, yes, it was good. It's the second book in a planned trilogy - good, solid fantasy in my opinion.

I'm listening to In the Woods. I listened to the first one, also, so decided to give this one a spin when I saw you were reading it. I kept doing road trips on short notice so decided it was time to get another audio book so I'd have one in hand for the next trip. I'm only 30 pages into Doc but it's starting out strong. Your library seems to get a lot of good author's as speakers. I wish ours did although our library does a good job of buying and selecting books and I guess that's what is most important.

I'm really liking Outlander so far - just haven't had enough time to read the past week (why does life keep interfering? :) I'm also halfway through Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and am liking it, also.
I notice you read a lot of interesting-looking books that I haven't heard of before. Where do you get most of your reading recommendations?
