So many books...so little time (or shelf space). I read a large variety of genres. I especially like history, historical fiction (especially English and anything set in New England), biographies, and anything that will challenge me and make me think.

I believe it was in the center of Rindge, NH. It was a really surprising find actually. My mother and I took a trip up there to look at some Maltese puppies, ended up being early and wandering around. We happened into the center of town at this odd bookstore that had Tarot readings or something, and I found it there. It didn't have a great selection of Tudor England books, but it had a few. It was an interesting place though, with their cats just wandering around and lounging on the couches.

Hi Cindy. Thanks for including your review. The novel sounds very interesting! Any novel a friend of mine gives five stars to I'm more than willing to try for myself :-)

Jeanne Kalogridis has written a few other works of historical fiction, my favourite being The Borgia Bride, which is set in Renaissance Italy. She also wrote The Devil's Queen about Catherine de Medici, but I definitely don't recommend this one. A couple others include The Burning Times and I, Mona Lisa, but I can't comment on those since I've not yet read them (I plan to though - even though I didn't like The Devil's Queen I definitely liked The Borgia Bride enough to give Kalogridis other works a try).

I'd love to visit Concord. In fact, my hubbie and I have been talking about taking a trip to Boston and I'd really like to see Salem. Maybe we'll do something like that next year. I've been to NY, Vermont, NH and Maine, but never to MA. I must remedy that! You should visit Ottawa, of course :-) I'd totally be your tour guide.

Hi Cindy. Is the Scarlett Contessa the latest release from Jeanne Kalogridis? If so, that one's on my wish list so I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed it. What is Mr. Emerson's Wife about? I think that one may have been discussed in the historical fiction group, but then again I may be getting it mixed up with something else.

I just finished Penman's Time and Chance. I didn't like it as much as the other Penman books I've read, but still thought it was very well done. I'm now working my way through The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer. It's very interesting.

That's too bad you didn't really enjoy The Queen's Lover. I'll be moving that one further down my to read pile. Did you read Bennett's Figures in Silk with us in The Lion and the Rose? I can't keep track of which members read which books when it comes to group reads :-). I was pretty disappointed with that one.

I'm now reading Sharon Kay Penman's Time and Chance, which is about Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. I normally love Penman's books, but after 100 pages this one hasn't yet gripped me. I've no doubt it will get though, since Penman hasn't yet letme down.

    What are you reading now?

Hi Cindy. I haven't written in a while so I thought I'd stop by and say hello. I hope you're doing well, and that you are enjoying the summer! Are you guys experiencing the crazy heat wave we are going through here? It's way to hot for me...I'm more of a cold weather person :-)

What are you reading at the moment?

Very interesting - thanks...think I'll pick it up. I read one vampire book and that was enough to turn me off vampire stories forever...with the exception of the The Historian which still made me a little sick but I liked the foray into then-communist countries like Romania and Hungary. I was raised Protestant but have been Catholic for a number of years so I'm very interested in this book. Thanks again for the response.

Cindy - how did you like Out of Egypt by Anne Rice? I haven't read any of her books since she quit the vampire stuff so I'm interested in your thoughts.

I am so glad you requested my friendship. I enjoy reading your opinions regarding books. We seem to have similar tastes. Don't worry about being shy. What castle is your picture? It's too small for me to really recognize it.

We had high winds but no snow or rain...we're just far enough south so we got lucky. Normally I would like snow but I'm crashing against a deadline at work and can't afford to be snowbound again.

Hi Cindy, I was interested in your review of Gabaldon's "An Echo in the Bone"; I loved the first 3 books passionately but my interest waned once they got to America. But the title of this book fascinates me because I have a theory (unproven, of course) that DNA remembers. This is my counter-reincarnation theory which I can't accept but I do believe that DNA holds more than just just your physical characteristics. I think it also makes us who we are in the non-physical sense and it accounts for why certain things appeal to individuals. For example, my Mom raised four kids - pretty much the same way as near as I can tell but I'm the only one who loves books with a passion. She read to all of us; why am I the only one this happened to? It's a crazy theory but the words "echo in the bone" fit it perfectly. (You're rethinking accepting that friendship request now, aren't you?) :-) Later,

I know what you mean about keeping up with groups! I think all of my reads for this month will be to fulfill group obligations...of course, I'm looking forward to reading each of them.

Hi Cindy. BookwormErin and I have started discussing Wolf Hall in the Tudor Group. Since you've also finished the book I thought maybe you'd like to join in the discussion.

I saw that you were interested in reading Wolf Hall for the Tudor History group. I just wanted to remind you that the group will be discussing the book at the end of the month and if you have read it or going to read it please stop by the group and give your thoughts. I started it about a week ago and it is really good. I can't wait to discuss it with everyone. Also we are taking nominations for a Feb group read if you have a book you would like to nominate.
    Happy reading

I definitely recommend The Moonstone if you can get your hands on a copy. I think I'll have to start Wolf Hall as soon as I finish The Secret Bride. I'll actually be reading it for another Shelfari group I'm in as well. I usually read pretty quickly, but since I have lots going on over the next few months I'll need to make sure I have time to finish it before discussion begins. Too bad you aren't able to get a copy of The Secret Bride.

Hi Cindy. I see that you've finished The Name of the Wind, and have rated it highly. I'll have to move my copy up closer to the top of my to read pile. I noticed in the Tudor Group that you mentioned you obtained a copy of Wolf Hall. That's great! I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'm currently reading Wilkie Collin's The Moonstone. It's fantastic...although with the holidays fast approaching and lots to do, I don't think I'll be finishing it anytime soon. Oh well. I still have to start The Secret Bride, too. Are you planning to read it?

Hi Cindy. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving. We celebrate Thanksgiving in October, so it isn't a holiday up here.

I tend to read across many genres also, but I do gravitate towards historical fiction. I've become a big fan of fantasy over the last year, and have been reading several enjoyable series. I also like YA lit - I'm a big Harry Potter fan, and have just read the first two books in Suzanne Collins Hunger Games trilogy. My to be read pile (and wish list) has grown immensely since I joined Shelfari, this is definitely a great place to get recommendations.

I visited Warwick once about 12 years ago. I loved it. I didn't get the chance to visit Kenilworth...guess I'll have to put that on my to see list for my next trip over. I was last in the UK a little over a year ago, and had the chance to visit Windsor Castle and the Tower of London (as you can see by my avatar), as well as Cardiff and Caerphilly Castles in Wales. I also went to Bath, which I most definitely want to visit again. I can't wait to go back!

Are you a member of the Tudor History group? We are doing a group read in Dec and Jan. Dec's book is The Secret Bride (I forget the name of the author, which is about one of Henry VIII's sisters, and Jan's book is Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. You should join the group if interested (maybe you already are a member? I didn't look at your group list).

    Take care.
