It's been a while since I read it, but I did like it. But I also liked "All Quiet on the Western Front," which I was more as an anti-war book. Another good WW1 book, in my opinion, is Johnny Got His Gun. It's a hard book to read, and does make an anti-war statement which is interesting as it came out in the late-30s. What books are you reading now and enjoying?

You didn't like "Naked and the Dead?" Have you read other Mailier novels?

Hi! I just finish the Mockingjay today, and I'm relief that the book ended the way it did... I was nervous about the things that were happening in the book, because it changes a lot, and there is a moment that you don't know what is going to happend... it's a really good book, I recommend you to read the saga, I really liked it, I hope you do too :)

Hi Mika, and thanks for the insights into Rebecca's Tale. Re-reading the original would be wonderful I think -- I certainly plan to some time. I can't remember if you've read her "My Cousin Rachel" or not? I always have a hard time deciding whether I prefer that or Rebecca. Take care now!

Hi Mika, I see you enjoyed Rebecca's Tale. The original Rebecca is one of my favourites. I tried Rebecca's Tale a few years back and couldn't get into it. Felt she tried to make links using some cues from the original, but had a very different writing style that put me off. I take it you found the story worthwhile enough to overcome the different style, if that bothered you at all. Also, I wonder if you have read Mrs DeWinter by Susan Hill, which I might be more likely to try, especially if favourably reviewed. Thanks for the updates and happy reading!

Hello, that's a pity, so we don't know if someone commented on our reviews... Oh well, I'm pretty happy with shelfari generally. On the equations side, I find Penrose doesn't shy away from at least *trying* to explain the maths -- he can try, I might still not get it -- and he has a very large but interesting book on the mathematics behind some of the physics. Hawking famously said he thought every equation would halve his readership (if memory serves me) but still couldn't resist Einstein's... If you are interested in the concepts I guessing you enjoyed the scene in Insignificance when the Actress explains relativity to the scientist?! :) Love classics too, but two contemporary's going at the moment, which are surprisingly good actually. Take care now!

Hi Mika! I wonder if shelfari tells you if someone's commented on a review you've written? If it does, you should have got info that I commented on your recent review of The Holographic Universe. If it doesn't well, I haven't repeated my comment here, but it should be there. Thanks for that, take care!

Thanks, Mika, that's very kind of you. Yes, Of Human Bondage did take its time getting moving. I think I got to the part where he first finds himself attracted to Mildred, so maybe I stopped just when the real story started. I've seen a recent adaptation of The Painted Veil, which I absolutely adored. You are right that in a way I would imagine it to be a little like On Chesil Beach, so a newly married couple's story. I found the whole idea -- in the film, at least -- of the characters finding they were never really in love with each other when they married, but truly loved each other by the end, after they really started to know each-other, understand each-other, and accept each-other.

Hi Mika! I enjoyed your recent review of Maugham, thanks. I am wondering if you have read "The Painted Veil" but finding you have so many books on your shelf, it's hard to know this, so I'll just ask instead -- sorry :) It's probably what I'll go for next with Maugham books. I read Liza of Lambeth, which I think was his first, and I didn't like it much. I started but never finished Of Human Bondage. Read either of those I wonder? Thanks again, and happy reading :)

It's sounds good... I loved The Hunger Games, it's a story of a girl who had to live in a town with hunger, and without money, so there is the Mayor City where it's a lot of food, and the people who live there trhow away their food just for fun, and also for fan, they invented a kind of reality show where they pick a Boy and a Girl for the towns arround to keep them in an arena to fight each other, and just one of them is going to win, and, the winner will have as a price a beutiful home, and a lot of food... I really enjoy it, the romance is a very important issue when the two of them are in the arena at the same time.... I really recommend it to you.

Hi Mika! The Black Dahlia coming along nicely, and Never Let Me Go, which I just started yesterday also really good so far. I am guessing from your comment that you enjoyed "On Chesil Beach"? I found it quite accessible and thoroughly enjoyed it. Take care and happy reading my friend!
