  • Imperfect: An Improbable Life 1st (first) Edition by Abbott, Jim, Brown, Tim [2012]
    • Rated 5 stars

A truly inspirational read about baseball, family, and confronting disability. Jim Abbott was always one of the good guys in professional sports, and his story gives me hope that all is not wrong with pro athletes today. If a pitcher with one hand can rise to the big leagues and throw a no hitter, anything is possible.

  • Radical: Fighting to Put Students First
    • Rated 4 stars

A very intriguing profile of one of the most interesting education leaders in America today. While I don't agree with all of her opinions and approaches, I do find Michelle Rhee's courage to take on entrenched special interests and fight for better opportunities for America's poor and minority children to be inspiring.

I had really low expectations about this book, as I think the current craze over the zombie and vampire genre is ridiculous. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this very entertaining story. It is a clever and very well written yarn that incorporates some fascinating true history with very creative embellishment.

    The Anatomy of Peace

    by The Arbinger Institute
    • Rated 5 stars

This is a book I will read again and again and again. Its simple but powerful formula on how to resolve conflicts and find peace, particularly with those who you believe have wronged you, is something every parent, spouse, and employer should give the most serious consideration.

  • The Wisdom of the Native Americans
    • Rated 4 stars

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Native American history and culture; it is a great compilation of some of the most significant Native beliefs on everything from education to spirituality. The full texts of the famous speeches by Chief Red Jacket, Chief Joseph, and Chief Seattle are compelling and inspirational.

  • Last Child in the Woods
    • Rated 5 stars

This is the best book I have read all year. Published in 2008, this carefully researched and insightful book makes a compelling case for "no child left inside." Richard Louv discusses the "growing body of evidence linking the lack of nature in children's lives and the rise in obesity, attention disorders, and depression." If his persuasive writing doesn't make you want to immediately unplug yourself and your kids and get out in the woods or on the water, I don't know what will.

  • Iron war : Dave Scott, Mark Allen & the greatest race ever run
    • Rated 5 stars

Just finished my 12th book of 2012. This riveting account of the careers of arguably the two best male professional athletes in the history of triathlon, centered on their epic battle in the 1989 Hawaii Ironman World Championship, is a terrific read. Very well researched and very well written by Matt Fitzgerald, the book takes you on a fascinating journey into the psychological preconditions and skills necessary to win in the ultimate test of pain.

  • NurtureShock
    • Rated 5 stars

A fascinating read that summarizes current research on several aspects of child development and debunks a number of common myths. Among other things, you will learn that frequent praise is harmful to children, that sleep deprivation has negative consequences, that kindergarten children cannot be accurately identified as "gifted," and that adolescent arguing with parents can actually be constructive to the relationship. While the authors acknowledge that kids can often be walking contradictions, they state that "the goal of having a deeper understanding of children is not futile." Rather, "it's by studying these apparent contradictions very closely that deeper understanding emerges."

  • Crossing to Safety
    • Rated 5 stars

I read this book nearly 20 years ago, and decided to read it again because I needed something hopeful and uplifting. An inspirational story about love, marriage, friendship, and the patience needed to deal nobly with adversity in one's life. One of Stegner's best.
