  • Three Little Ghosties
    • Rated 5 stars

Goodhart's funny story about three mischievous ghosts is fun. My little one wants this one read over and over again.

The animals on the farm read about the talent contest at the county fair and spend their time practicing. The farmer knows they're up to something; he just doesn't know what. So the night of the fair, he takes them all with him so he can keep his eye on them. Little does he know that was all part of their big scheme.

  • A Pipkin of Pepper
    • Rated 4 stars

Cat, Squirrel and Duck find themselves without a main component of their pumpkin soup and must visit the city to get more, but Duck has never been to the city and the other two are worried that if he goes he'll get lost. After some convincing, Duck finds himself in the city with Cat and Squirrel, but not without some hiccups along the way.

The illustrations are so fun and I love how the text and illustrations are integrated together on some of the pages.

  • The Cow That Was the Best Moo-ther
    • Rated 4 stars

As a follow-up to The Cow That Laid An Egg, Marjorie enters her baby Daisy in a beauty contest only allowed for the cows on the farm to enter their calves. The farmer's wife is the judge, and some unlikely fun occurs. Again, Russell Ayto's whimsical illustrations make these stories. They are so fun to read because of the funny story line and the illustrations seal the deal. Marjorie's antics will have your child laughing hysterically.

Marjorie doesn't feel very special, so her friends, the chickens, help her out. One morning Marjorie awakens to find that she's laid an egg! She quickly acclimates to motherhood and loves her little baby, even if the other cows on the farm are haters.

The illustrations in this picture book are really fun and my 4 year old loves the story line. She thought it was hilarious.

  • Increase in Learning: Spiritual Patterns for Obtaining Your Own Answers
    • Rated 5 stars

Maybe it's because my father was an educator and Brother Bednar comes from an educational background, because I really enjoyed the content of this and felt like I understood Brother Bednar's approach more due to growing up with my father. ncrease In Learning was eye opening for me and actually helped me gain some insight into some of the principles my father raised me with. This is a worthwhile read that highlights ways we can increase our spiritual learning and improve ourselves. I learned a LOT and am excited to apply them to my life.

    Hubble Bubble, Granny Trouble

    by Tracey Corderoy
    • Rated 4 stars

This is such a fun read about a very different grandma and her granddaughter's perception about what a grandmother is and how she ought to behave. While she finds her grandmother's antics very different and unique, the protagonist soon realizes that all the reasons she loves her grandmother are the very things she at first wanted to curb. This is a delightful story about learning to appreciate everyone's differences, whatever they are, and celebrating them as the things that make us each unique and special.

  • My Name is Mary Sutter
    • Rated 3 stars

Talented midwife, Mary Sutter, seeks to become a surgeon in a conservative, male-oriented world during the Civil War era. Her desire to become something that is essentially unheard of at the time takes her on a circuitous journey where she experiences first hand the pain and suffering of war. This is a sometimes shocking look into the atrocious conditions experienced by the wounded during the war and the often futile attempts at rendering aid.

I enjoyed this book, but I guess I found the human/relationship element somewhat cliche and lackluster for my taste, although, that could just be me. I enjoyed learning more about the Civil War from the perspective that Oliveira offered through her characters, but I can't say that all the strands of the relationship web between characters necessarily added to the content of the novel, which I typically hope for.

All in all, however, My Name Is Mary Sutter is an educational look into the horrors of the Civil War as seen from the civilian's POV. I learned quite a number of things that I was previously unaware of that was insightful and interesting to me. Oliveira does a good job weaving in these tidbits into the fictional aspects of the book.

  • Life of Pi
    • Rated 4 stars

I am unexpectedly pleasantly surprised by this novel. I understand that there will be the occasional hype, especially since a film was recently made based upon this book, and yet the hype does not always balance out the actual content. But I have to say this fascinated me, disgusted me, and provoked me to some lines of thinking I've never traveled before.

I was surprised by the themes that Pi illuminates during his journey and how deep they really are. He introduces them so simplistically and so straight forward that if you aren't searching for those seeds of thought, they can be so easy to miss. And honestly, how tragic for you, because there are some real gems of Truth in here.

What a beautiful story of survival, religion & spiritualism, self-discovery, and the unfortunate behavior of the natural man. Life of Pi ended up being a diamond in the rough for me. It's been a while since I've read a book that touched me on that kind of level, and while it did take me some time to get through it, it was well worth the journey.

  • Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me: A unique guide to skin care and makeup products from today's hottest brands - shop smarter and find products that really work!
    • Rated 4 stars

This is a great resource to find effective skincare and makeup products without having to deal with the hype of the marketing teams for each of the billion (it seems, anyway) companies out there trying to get our money. I have super sensitive skin and eczema and after trying some of the recommended products and learning specific ingredients and other things to avoid, I've seen an improvement. This is a great reference, but since she practically comes out with a new edition each year, I would definitely borrow this from the library before you purchase it. She also has some resources online you can access.

This is a weighty volume, and the best way for me to read it was to just look at the products I was using and investigate a few I wanted to try. It's just so thorough and detailed that there's no way on earth to read every single bullet point or product review. Although, that is what makes this a valuable resource...everyone is using something different and chances are, she's included it in her book.
