    INDIA; THE OTHERSIDE
    January 17, 1998

It seems only India’s negative points are highlighted. Unlike Israel or Taiwan India doesn’t have a powerful public relations machine (foreign media can help).True. Even so, India has unique plus points. India, world’s largest democracy is fair, polite and friendly. It has efficient well functioning judiciary, free press, well matured political system, dynamism, vitality and unity in diversity. Contrary to general perception, India has free, fair trade policies. Indian expatriates never trouble their host countries. India has a large number of highly skilled world class managers. India’s scientific man pool and human resource potential are behind only of Russia and America. Its english knowing population, 175million and rising is second only to the USA. According to IMF/WB PPP method, India is a trillion dollar economy. India’s GDP growth is modest. But America, world’s largest economy has only 3%GDP growth.
Moreover, for half century India held and preserved democracy, her most precious
asset against heavy odds. She can certainly proud on it.
India is often unfairly criticized. Heavily controlled and government guided economies, Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore hailed as free. While India, with fair free policies and relatively few barriers branded as festrictive. In multilateral trade and economic benefits, India yields too much but receives very little. While Asian dictatorships give too little but gain very much. Unlike India, they are contemptuous of the West. They dictate their own one side policies and do encourage piracy. Asian autocracies have no interest in written laws, pacts or agreements. In their view democracy is a weakness. They never waste a chance to preach about their racial and cultural superiority with apparent arrogance, abrasiveness and hostility.
Ref. 1) ‘Running Into The Great Wall’ - Louis Kraar -Fortune - Nov.1993. 2) The Steal - Brian Freemantle. 3.) An Asia That can say No- Shintaro Ishihara and Mahathir Mohammed.
West shall realize and recognize this simple fact; strengthening of India is their gain, weakening their loss. India isn’t a threat to any country. Now because of her peaceful nature, power and location, India is a powerful ally of West & Japan in general and of Australia & Newzealand in particular. But India does need credible, far better military power.
Except Isreal and Japan India’s friends lie outside Asia. In 1962 China war and 1994 plague outbreak Asia betrayed us. But West helped
Too much unjust criticism on two peaceful democracy, India and Japan, may raiseultranationalism there.
World’s most powerful and influential democracy, America is very similar to India, world’s largest democracy. They can cooperate further.
MNCs should shift their attention to the bottom 88%of Indian population (Ever weakening rupee push even basic products and services beyond their wilest dreams). The top12% doesn’t need them. When the former get purchasing power (US$ 1 = Rs. 5 - 10), MNCs can realize their dreams in India. In an Rs. 10,000 YPCI country, there won’t be many takers for Rs. 1000+ books.
Except books Indians almost always endure substandard (Indianized) often obsolete products and services. Local replication affects quality and novelty. MNCs market only their low end products and services in India Philips, Thomson & Sony are exceptions. Introduction of real unadulterated foreign products and services in India is a must.
We, an open society admit our short comings. Ours is a high cost, low income and above all an information scarce society. But it can be changed
Information and trade are two way streets. Controls affect credibility; the greatest value. India awaits her deserved position among the global community.

    DEMOCRATIC EDGE

Importance of Freedom and the Power of Knowledge

    Joseph Manimala, September 8,1996
    Pala – 686 575

Nowadays many people, even free world intellectuals under value democracy. Totalitarian control over citizenry is recommended as the reasonable way to progress. But totalitarian countries’ super growth rates are a myth (20% GDP growth add about 7 billion dollars to Singapore economy. But only a modest 5% growth adds 50 billion dollars to Indian economy. America, world’s largest economy has only about 3% GDP growth. World’s richest country grouping, G-7, hasn’t a single nondemocratic member. Among 25 developed countries there are only 2 non democracies. Authoritarian Singapore pales before democratic Japan.
Whenever restrictions imposed on a society, its efficiency and vigor declined. In fifteenth century liberal Protestant countries surpassed restrictive Catholic countries in scientific achievements. The Story of Mankind - Hendrik Willern Van Loon.
However strong they became, oppressive regime always collapsed. Inquisition Spain, Nazi Germany, Communist USSR. Resource rich USSR stagnated under totalitarian rule. But with scarce resources free Japan became an economic miracle.
The Swiss are praised for their clock work precision and meticulous efficiency. In liberal Sweden women enjoy highest status in the world. France outperforms almost all countries in fashion, culture and new technologies. America is world’s foremost foreign investment destination. Investors prefer it over Japan and Germany. Neither Japan nor Germany has the ultimate investment haven credential; the capability and willingness to use military power for protecting economy and investments.
But America’s strength lies not on its economy or military. But on its mass culture. American books, mags, films and music rule the earth. Also in the global technological race too, America has the edge. Thanks to its awesome knowledge base. It successfully attracts talent from Russia and India. Liberty gives America such innovative power.
However, an open society cannot conceal its short comings. Americans are on the whole, very frank about their troubles and do believe in open discussions. Topmost American writers describe America fairly and modestly. In his book Economics For our Times (1967), Mr. Augustus H. Smith fairly describes poverty in the United States. He also expressed concern over Soviet overtaking of America in Science and GDP. In Power Shift, Alvin Toffler points out America’s strength and acknowledges its weak points. He underlines the power of knowledge.
Imagination is the driving force behind human progress. Yesterday’s wildest dreams become today’s realities those great visionaries like Jules Verne and Arthur C. Clarke, with their amazing imagination and foresight driver our civilization to unthinkable heights. Freedom does enhance creativity and nurture progress.

Oct.1997 S E Asia Crash/Meltdown proves my article. I wrote this when democracy was out of fashion.
