I am back to the world of books after a long vacation from it (from books, not a vacation in general... unless you count coding databases vacation.. ).

I am currently putting on my beloved fiction on hold and entering the world of poetry, philosophy, religion and politics. I am interested in your recommendation in these topics. So... more »

No problem! I don't log in much often. Yeah I noticed by the way, it deserved to be more popular :)
It was really out-of-the-box stuff for me, because I'm from Belgium and never really knew what was going on in China and I learnt a lot! And yeah, it's also a beautiful love story :)

    Hello there :)
I wanted to ask you what you thought of the book 'Under the Hawthorn Tree', because you're the only one (except me) on Shelfari who read it.

    Hi!

What other languages do you like to read in besides English? I've always wanted to read novels originally in French and Japanese.

    Ciao!

I'm so glad you enjoyed Mr. Popper! (you have to be careful with autotype when writing about ol' Mr. Popper!). And thanks for sharing your enjoyment with me. Your note gave me a smile, which is always appreciated!

    That's because,

No one trusts as they did, back at that time: But I can say, I do! And I can honestly say: That My Love, is even Deeper. Yeah, I understand, exactly what U are saying, exactly, what U are referring 2! I am from the old school where I believe, that a man, should be Better! And Greater, than what He was....Yesterday!

U appear, a very, with your head on straight Person Woman! I could tell that, from the depth, of the words that sprang out of your mouth and Mind! Plus, U appear, to be, very Beautiful, or should I say Maganda! But Yes! I agree, but Please, don't think, 4 one moment, that Loe has died, It is a trick of the enemy, U know, the one

who wants fplk to think that the very essense, that causes, life to continue, is no longer available. I heard it say, that GOD is Love! Soooo, if God is Love, and Love is dead, Then that would mean that God is! And Novina, if God is Dead, U and I, would surely Be. And keep this in mind, If God was dead,

then who, or whom, would be, keeping us! Ahhhh, the devil, No way! But Yes, Love is Here, and eternally, and I pray, that U find it, or should I say, better say: U allow
it 2 Find U! But, Wuthering Heights, is an insane, reality of the possibility, of what....
Love can DO! But True Love, God's Love, is Even Greater than That!

Read 1st Corinthians Chapter 13, and learn what LOVE, Bod's Love, and Real & True Love, is all about! Learn about the Love that is Kind, the Love that, envies
not, and the Love, that is Not Puffed up, and behave it's self! The Love, that never fails, never ends. To Put It Simply.....it's as I said "Eternal!"

    Novina,
I couldn't agree more with your assessment of "The Five People You Meet In Heaven." At least "Tuesdays with Morrie" was a real conversation. This book was simply schlock.
    Keepin' it sparkly!

We read aloud every night with our children (7 and 8 years old). Besides "The BFG" - which is already on your shelf - we've enjoyed...

"Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH"
    "The Cricket in Times Square"
    "Misty of Chincoteague"
    "Mr. Popper's Penguins."

(We've started a new book group to discuss books to read aloud "Best Read Aloud Books" if you're interested in checking it out).

    hi Novina, thanks for writing...
how about The Velveteen Rabbit, or any of the Beatrix Potter books. Pooh's Corner is good. Speaking of which, The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet are good 'adult' books that mean something, but yet done with a gentle Pooh-like character.
Maurice Sendak is always good, if a bit dark at times - see Where the Wild Things Are or In the Night Kitchen.
    happy reading,
    Jay

I should read "Midnight's Children" too, but I don't think any book on India would give a clear view of India or its culture like books on Japan or other countries does. India is really very complex and it cannot be depicted by books. I might change this view if I come across any book if it truly gives India's picture.

to be frank, when you first wrote the note, I wondered the same "what does literature really mean?" cuz I've got not much idea of 'literature' in books and yea 'Argumentative Indian' has essays, but I guess it is more about Indian culture and so, not sure though.

I'll let you know later, if I come across any.

btw I'm getting 'Made in Japan' by Akio Morita (Sony founder) from India. Do you want to read it ? This book seems to be very rare.

I don't know much abt any such books, as I have not read, so I cannot recommend you any. I am not sure but "Argumentative Indian" is one of the best books written on India (i think culture probably) by Amartya Sen who won Nobel prize in economics.

I read just first 3 or 4 pages, I loved it, I don't know why I stopped it, back more than an year ago.
