Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (BOTM) or you can debate the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in the choosing of BOTM and the discussions. The current books are pinned to the top for that month. There are older discussions that can be found by searching discussions. If there is any way the group administrator can help further feel free to ask one of us. If you don’t own the book the list can be found at the top in the group description or at http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. Sorry, Sweet Lady! I am here. A lot has been going on, but we are alright.

I haven't been reading as quickly thru the stack I have, and have been doing a lot more professional reading which I don't usually post on Shelfari. It's not the cover to cover stuff you'd be interested in!!!

Your latest trip sounds wonderful. So glad you do that for yourself! I don't know that I will ever visit there, but love to hear about it. We did see the Jersey Boys here and loved it! I would love to see the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show they have there, too. And eat at those restaurants. I am a Food Network junkie!

One of my closest friends from Chicago is coming in for a weekend, and I'm so excited. We realized that aside from her not coming in for a real visit in 5 years, my visits with her when I go there are only short ones, a couple hours at most. And we really need some good uninterrupted girl time. So I will pick her up from the airport, we will go to a really nice resort/spa that's only about an hour or so away and spend the weekend there. Gabbing, eating, walking if it's nice out, a trip to the spa for some pampering, maybe some shopping at a pretty spot close by. She won't be seeing my family at all even tho she is close with them, too. Just the two of us, and I can't wait. That will be in 3 weeks.
And this morning, I just made my reservations for Israel!!!!!! I'll be going mid-February til the first weekend in March. By myself. I've never done an overseas trip alone before, (have only been out of the country a few times) and I'm nervous and excited. No tour. Altho, if I have some free days, I may decide to do a mini-tour while there. I'll volunteer at Alyn Children's Hospital in Jerusalem for about 5 days, and will spend time with family and friends I have there. A lot will depend on who is free when. I planned it so that I would have 2 weekends there because that is the best time to visit for most. And a couple people have told me that they may take off of work to travel with me if they can. I'll fill you in more as I know more. Just getting my dates and reservations has thrilled me to no end!!

Today I am home although I was supposed to be at the Autism Walk. I seem to be coming down with a little cold, and since it is Saturday, I figured it was smarter for me to stay home and rest it out. I did raise over $900, so that's wonderful. There's a hot air balloon festival going on in our town this weekend, and the sky was filled with them this morning, with the sun rising behind them. A really beautiful site.

Hope all continues to be well with you and yours. Julia Alvarez is very worth your time; she's a gifted writer. I haven't finished the book yet, tho, she said with an embarrassed look on her face! I just picked up Nine Parts of Desire by Geraldine Brooks. She's a good writer, and this book is for a book group. It's not one I'd have picked, but I'll give it a try.
Okay, better get going. Sorry to worry you, my friend. But it's so nice to be missed, isn't it?

    Love,

    Nancy

Thanks Carol. I got the sample on my Kindle and was drawn right in. I imagine I will read it but you are so kind to offer your audio. I have recently bought some audio books for my iPod but don't seem to comprehend them as well as reading. Could be related to listening at work. LOL If I listen on my commute it sinks in. I have so MANY TBR my problem is deciding what to read next.

Hi Nonna, I am thinking of reading Shantaram and was looking at your review. I have read reviews here and on Amazon and some people say the book drags in places. It is 900 pages, did it hold your interest or was it a chore to finish?
    Thanks!

I'm sorry to get you in trouble! :) I have heard a quote that basically says Italy is an "experience", and sounds like you had it!!!!!! You are so lucky.

Watch the movie "Avanti" with Jack Lemmon. A Billy Wilder film, romantic comedy/drama. More comedy. One of my all time top 3 favorites!

    Hi Carol,

You know I have so many books to read in my bedroom I have adopted the same policy. If I am not hooked pretty fast, I put it in the pile to go back to my sister and pick another one!

When I went through the books to sort out hers and mine, I had two of those reusable bags full of my own books and about 5 of hers, and a box. I also have books stored under my bed. She said I should have enough books for this winter - how about for this lifetime?

It is nice here. 75 for a high today and low humidity, but we are heating up tomorrrow. I am so glad we are almost done with summer.

Virginia is beautiful. I will never forget a trip I made back in 1988. My mother was real protective of me. One of my best friends lost her husband and brought his ashes back to Waynesboro, Va. to be buried and I wanted to see her. I planned to go, alone.

Mama wanted to have Daddy drive me, drop me off at Joan's mother's, and then bring me home. When I refused, she called the state troopers to get arrival times from Greensboro, and explained to me that the Shennandoah Valley was the "wilderness". It is a funny story now. Then, not so much.

My husband went to college with Elizabeth and John and he really is impressed with her. Me, not so much - for either of the Edwards.

    Talk soon!

Carol, yes I do love Italy! My Dad was 2nd generation Sicilian American. He did genealogy and now I do. I hope to get there someday! I would imagine I would not want to come home either! Your trip sounds lovely and memorable.
I try to read alot abt Italy too, to learn more abt the ancestors and for my own interest.
Sebastiano is available on Amazon, I got it thru a Sicilian site (arbasicula.com) They try to preserve sicilian literature in the USA.. I loved "That summer in sicily", I think you might like that one!! There are so many books.I will check my tags and refresh my memory and let you know. What are your favorites? I try to get library books but when I can't and really want it,I will buy it.

    Hi Carol,

Hope you are doing well. Our weather has gone flakey and my allergies are driving me crazy, but other than that, I am good.

Which book are you talking about? I don't have anything on books I am reading that is about a bookshop?

Serrendipity - this book is SLOW going. It is a good story. You can see little Audrey Hepburn in the staring role, but man! I don't t hink I am ever going to finish it and it is only 300 pages long! I think part of it is that I'll read a chapter that is really good and then the next one doesn't grab me. Some of the reviews on this book are not so hot. I'm not sure where I am going to shake out on it.

Ghost Dogs of the South - this is a book that is a collection of ghost stories that involves dogs which I've picked up and down. It is fun.

Reiliance (Elizabeth Edwards) - I wasn't looking for a scandal sheet on John when I bought this book, but I got to tell you I am not overwhelmed with this book. I've not been able to get through it.

My sister sent home 30 new books with me this weekend. I was home yesterday and I went through all the book bags and boxes and sorted them so I'd know which were hers and which were mine.

    Have you started Mary?
