The author of the Dresden Files spins a story where student wizard spies must prevent civil war AND defeat an insectoid Borg. It's...awesome.

This is classic fantasy, written by the author of the Dresden Files. It focuses on an orphan boy with a mysterious past who wants to prove himself and a girl spy who is constantly underestimated who also wants to prove herself. Set in a medieval society where there is conflict between the rural crofters and the civilised lords of the capital, and conflict between both and various outsider races that turn out to be not so different after all...add anthropomorphised elemental magic and a whole lot of fighting against long odds for what you believe in...it's nothing new but the storytelling is good and that's most important to me!

The first two Dresden Files were awkwardly written and had an annoying fixation on the attractive assets of women. But from this point on they get better.

Detective Dresden's adventures continue, this time with scads of werewolves! Twists and turns abound. Also, many opportunities for shapely ladies to run about in the all together. This series is totally for boys. Most distracting: the amount of times that Harry says "hells bells"

My husband has just devoured every one of Harry Dresden's adventures, in less than a month. He's been urging me to read them as well. These are potboiling detective novels, wherein the detective is also a magician. This series is written for guys. There are a lot of shapely legs and glimpses of bosom. Women are sultry sexpots (or cute girls next door) who find themselves irresistibly drawn to Detective Dresden. A fun read, but in the 'magical detective' genre I honestly like the Skullduggery Pleasant series better!

A he-said/she-said review of married life written by a television writer and his bit-part actress wife. Pretty boring, and I think I only finished it because I was trapped on a train with nothing else to read.

Henry Luce was a very driven but socially awkward man who had some fascinating experiences. I enjoyed reading about his childhood in China, world travels, time at posh boarding schools and Yale, the foundations of his publishing empire, glamourous marriages and influence on World War 2. However things really bogged down in the depressing collapse of his relationship and paranoid old age. I struggled to maintain interest. I'd suggest giving up when things start to get dull because it doesn't get better.

I was a little frustrated by the awkward verbosity of Wildwood, because I wanted to love it. Everything I hoped for has been realised in this. Tighter editing results in less distracting language and the story and characters are fantastic! Loved it.

This should be right in my wheelhouse: written by my favourite musician, set in my home forests, a cross between Labyrinth and The Chronicles of Narnia starring a spunky bookish girl who idolises Nancy Drew, filled with intriguing 10 dollar words I'd have looked up and cherished...I just couldn't get into it.

It's got a condescending "kiddies' storytelling" tone that I hated in my youth and find frustrating now and had a really distracting problem with word repetition. A heavy-handed editor would have done this book a lot of favours.

    "...The birds disappeared around--"
Curtis interrupted her. "Birds? What birds?"
"The birds that kidnapped my brother"...
Curtis' face had dropped. "What do you mean, birds kidnapped your brother?" he stammered. "Like, birds?"

I am hoping the next one is better because I really want to love this series!

I once heard poor Anne referred to as "the lesser Bronte". I've now read her work and I can see why. She seems to have less imagination than her sisters and had less experiences to draw from. This is basically an autobiography of a very dull, lonely, and judgemental governess.
