Definition of a reading life:
- Read at every opportunity. Keep most of the books you read, in part showing respect to the authors, and also having access for reference and re-reading.
- Retain a deep seated passion for reading: the love, at times, of almost anything in print.
- Cast a wide net: ignore (or be oblivious to) existing...more »

    Hi Nick,

I notice we have a lot of books in common. I like your favorites on Years of Rice and Salt and Pastwatch as those have had a big impact on me. Will you be my friend?

I quite agree with your choice of The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories; to my mind it's simply one of the best single author SF collections ever published. After it, I would rate Slow Birds by Ian Watson

    Hi Nick~

Thanks for keeping up with my shelf. Actually, the spate of reading/adding is because the wife and I are getting ready to move to a new region of Alaska, McPhee territory on the Yukon.

If you did enjoy _Coming Into the Country_ I would reccomend _A Land Gone Lonesome_ by Dan O'Neill. In this one, O'Neill travels down the Yukon by boat and checks in on many of the folks McPhee talked to 25 years later.

The best Alaska book I just finished was one about the only guy who lives a subsistence lifestyle in ANWR year-round, Heimo Korth. His wife is from the island where we lived and taught this year. I think you'll dig: _The Last Frontiersman_ by James Cambell. I've done a lot of whacky things up here and have gotten my share of frost-bite, but I'm a big wuss compared to any of the Korths.

Hi Nick, The book will be out June 6, and I'm still working on getting those sample chapters so that I can post them. The blurb and cover can be seen at: http://www.covenant-lds.com/osb2/itemdetails.cfm?ID=2231 I'll email the sample chapters once I've got the final version. We did the last tweaks to the page proofs just yesterday.

How are you liking Steve's new book? He's just signed a major, seven book deal and his career's going stronger than ever. I do hope you like the Mars book. It's my personal favorite by him.

Enjoy Utah! I'm actually not a Utah Mormon. I've got a ton of in-laws there, but I hail from New Mexico.

Well, I am going to start Dispossessed by the weekend (I'm a fan of leGuin's earthsea trilogy - haven't read anything else yet) But I just picked up "Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" and this seems like a fun read so that pleased me! Thank you!

hey! So, you asked me for a pratchett recommendation some time back .. and the true (and long delayed ) answer is that I don't think I've read any. I am desperately wanting a great novel at the mooment... you know, one of those "this world ceases to exist cuz I'm too wrapped up in the book" kind of stories! Know of any?

If you are in SLC sometime, let me know you are coming. Maybe we could do lunch. Since I'm retired, my schedule is very flexible. I hope you do make it to CONduit. I'm rarely away from the Registration Desk, so you will be able to meet me, and I meet you.

George Martin is Great! Now if he could only write faster and finish his series! He's doing what Stephen King did with the Dark Tower Series!
