There are 4 Douglas Sirk "women's pictures" from the 1950's available on DVD. The actress that stars in most of them is Jane Wyman. The films are: Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind (available for Instant Viewing), and Imitation of Life. The other movie (tearjerker) that I was recommending was Brief Encounter, directed by David Lean.
Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die here and join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (from the book) or you can argue the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in our discussions. The current books are at the top of the list for that month. If there is any way I or Mossflower can answer your questions about the group or about Shelfari, let us know.If you don’t own the book the list can be found http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. A downloadable list of the second edition is available at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=160.
I thoroughly enjoyed Turn of the Screw. I thought there was enough horror the story even if you removed the whole supernatural aspect. I mean - just what did Miles say to his classmates that was so terrible it got him expelled? Just what did Mrs. Grose mean when she said that Peter Quint "had his way" with everyone in the household? I thought Henry James actually managed to use Victorian-era squeamishness concerning sex to make the story even more chilling and effective.
page 265 in The Golden Compass - at this point, I feel like I am finishing this book just to spite it, if that makes sense. Can't wait for it to be over.
I'm going to be a little shit and say: make sure you mark some books as your favorites so I know what to "steal" from your bookshelf.PS-I thought you hated/didn't like Huck Finn?
Keep on reading in the free world!
