I've recently started reviewing books for several websites. This is an unpaid gig but I get to write about books that I love to read and occasionally it may pay me a little for author requested "express reviews." This is something anyone can do and I do enjoy seeing my reviews posted.

This was a great book, first I've read by Darnton. I will definitely go back and read his previous ones, as well as his new one, Black, White and Dead All Over.

Panama is the first attempt at writing by author Eric Zencey. It has as its background the Panama Canal Scandal that France found itself dealing with at the end of the 19th Century. The central character is historian Henry Adams, who travels to Paris at the request of then Presidential staff member John Hay. Bit by bit he gets drawn into a web of bribery and murder, all centered around the collapse of the French Company formed to help build the Panama Canal. While the book is a little slow at the start, it eventually gets going and was an enjoyable read. There is definitely potential to bring back Adams as the character for a series. I give this book 7 out of 10 stars.

Another great read from Hiassen, combining the cutthroat world of bass fishing, a former governor and a greedy evangelist preacher. You can't miss with this one.

  • The Seventh Commandment
    • Rated 4 stars

Insurance investigator Dora Conti is sent to investigate the death of a wealthy jeweler in NYC. As she delves deeper into the Starrett family business, all is not as it appears and with 3 million dollars at stake, she questions who she can trust. This is a good book and an easy read-perfect for a plane or train ride.

  • When the Wind Blows
    • Rated 5 stars

This book introduces Kit Harrison, a disgraced FBI agent and Frannie O'Neil, a veterinarian. Frannie can't believe her eyes one day when she sees a young girl take flight. Kit Harrision encounters Frannie as he pursues a doctor conducting genetic research on humans in a lab that has moved around the country. When Kit and Frannie finally "capture" the young girl, they learn she is one of several children bred with amazing abilities. From there begins a chase as Frannie and Kit try to protect the children and get them to a safe place. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the sequel, The Lake House.

  • Thunder in the Deep: A Novel of Undersea Military Action and Adventure
    • Rated 4 stars

Thunder in the Deep is the second entry in Joe Buff's bestselling series about Captain Jeffrey Fuller and the crew of the USS Challenger. This book finds the Challenger on a rescue mission to save the crew of the Texas, which was disabled by the high-tech German sub Deutschland. What follows is a successful rescue, followed by a cat and mouse chase thru the North Atlantic. This is an excellent book if you like naval adventures.

This is the first book I've read by Peretti, a well-known Christian author. I typically don't seek out books by Christian authors but was pleasantly surprised by this one. The book opens with the brutal killing of a logger in the woods of Idaho. What follows is a desparate search by a husband for his wife when they go on a survivalist weekend getaway. I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more of Peretti.

This is th e first in a six or seven book series about submarine warfare of the future. I first read a book in the series last year, not realizing until later that it was part of a series. The focus of the books is Commander Jeffrey Fuller, who assumes command of the SSN Challenger when the is badly injured during a fight with a German sub. The book opens with some background on the war: Germany and South Africa have both had military coups and have managed to take over much of Europe and part of the African continent. Challenger's mission is to destroy a bioweapon facility. If you like military novels, this is a series you should enjoy.
