The family can't help that they live in a neighborhood where the only way to get money is collecting trash.
Maybe it is slum, but that was how their life was.

I read your opinion on "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" . What exactly do you mean by 'NY slum'?

    Hello,

I just read your comments on White Oleander and I am in my seconding reading of it. To tell the truth I must have be sleeping through the first time. I love this book. I decided to go back to it, but it was on my shelf, but I wasn't able to put the story together in my head, so back I went. I love it. I do not have your background at all, but I do love the written word. I love walking inside a story, words, thoughts and to come away with my own thoughts. How lucky are we.
