Excellent companion to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. If you enjoyed the footnotes that would span several pages, you'll very much enjoy this collection of short stories.

Good, but there just aren't enough pages. It felt like there was a much larger story to be told.

If Nobody Owens had more time to grow into the 14 year old we see at the end of the book, if Silas and Miss Lupescu had more pages devoted to their activity away from the graveyard, if Scarlett had been a little more interesting and if Liza Hempstock had played a larger role, this could've been another Neverwhere.

  • Moby-Dick or, The Whale (Penguin Classics)
    • Rated 5 stars

Moby Dick was the first serious novel I'd ever read and it opened my eyes to what books could be: a refuge, a trip, an escape, a dream. When I was reading this book, I was immersed, I was on the ship and completely lost to the physical world.

This remains one of my favorite books.

Breathtaking in scope, Schismatrix Plus threatens to overwhelm you with information at times, yet the story flows so well and so easily.

  • The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God: and Other Stories
    • Rated 4 stars

I picked this up after watching Wristcutters: A Love Story and I wasn't disappointed. The short story: The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be God was easily my favorite of them all.

  • Halting State
    • Rated 3 stars

Halting State has one of the most believable and engaging near-futures I've had the pleasure of reading about. If the characters had been more charismatic and natural and if the relationship between the two primary characters felt less contrived, this would easily have been one of my favorite books.

  • Little Brother
    • Rated 4 stars

This was the first Doctorow book I've read and I'll likely read more of his work if it's anything to judge by.
Both a cautionary tale of government excess in the interest of national security and a coming of age story, Little Brother was a great, fun read.
I'm a sucker for dystopian futures or alternate realities, so thematically I was sold by the synopsis, but the execution was flawless, as well.

An excellent collection of darkly themed short stories.

  • Twilight (Twilight, Book 1)
    • Rated 3 stars

Probably deserves better than 3 stars. Even if I felt self-conscious reading an "I love you the most." "No, I love YOU the most." but-with-vampires novel, I still read it in 2 sittings.

  • The Shack
    • Rated 2 stars

I'm not sure why so many people think this was a good book; the protagonist kept lobbing slow pitches to God so that he could hit spiritual home runs. This book is either a primer for young christians or an attaboy for those who think they're alright in the big guy's book.
