    Emily,
Thanks for accepting my "friend" invitation. I can't believe how many books on your shelf are also on mine. We must have similar taste in novels, for sure. Before I comment on Water for Elephants, I want to make sure this is being sent as a private note and not a public one. The screen I'm currently on makes it look like it's public.

Emily, I finished Water for Elephants yesterday. Are you almost finished?

The audio version is neat because there are actually two different readers, one obviously old and one a younger man. At first, the old Jacob's voice was difficult for me to understand...he is sort of gravly (sp?), but I've gotten used to it. Between his story, sense of humor (as you mentioned), and even his voice, he's endeared himself to me. I highly recommend audio books for commutes or road trips. We started listening to kids' books this way when my girls were about 8 and 10. I wish I had discovered them much sooner. They really make car rides pass by pleasantly and quickly. I get most of my audio books at the library. I don't purchase them.

You mentioned the narrator of Water for Elephants...are you listening to it as well, or are you just referring to the main character? I'm very surprised that I'm enjoying this book since it's about the circus, but I truly am. I actually look forward to my 30-minute commute because I get to "read" this book while I drive. I guess it's believable because of the time period it's set in. Ninety-three-y/o Jacob's thoughts and feelings seem to ring true as well.

    Emily,
I was doing some "exploring" on Shelfari and saw that we are both reading Water for Elephants. I'm a little more than halfway through. I'm actually listening to it on CD as I drive to and from work. I'm a relatively new Shelfari member like you.

Thanks to your reply of my question "Should I read Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith?" I'll put it on my wishlist.
