A note on books:
Listing books here by no means suggests they are reliable; many of these books are consulted because of period insights, proximity to primary sources or events, context, etc., not necessarily for their accuracy. On the other hand, most volumes consulted are highly documented, impeccably sourced, true histories and investigations. So this list, then, includes both the most credible and the least credible.
Most are obtainable through your public library. If you live in a big city the chances are greater for finding the rare volumes. Also most libraries have what is known as 'interlibrary loan', which means you can request books from universities and special libraries. It might cost some, it might not. Finally, you should have access to a variety of online databases through your library, so you have access to periodicals, journals, etc..
As to the amount of books read, first and foremost the concept of quality before quantity is of prime importance; most of the books on my list have been read by me, some have been consulted for specific passages or chapters, some just randomly flipped through, and some to be read in the future. There is only so much time in a day.....
"It is perfectly possible for a man to be out of prison, and yet not free -
to be under no physical constraint and yet to be a psychological captive,
compelled to think, feel and act as the representatives of the national
state, or of some private interest within the nation, wants him to think,
feel and act…The nature of psychological compulsion is such that those who act under constraint remain under the impression that they are acting on their own
initiative. The victim of mind-manipulation does not know that he is a
victim. To him the walls of his prison are invisible, and he believes
himself to be free. That he is not free is apparent only to other people.
His servitude is strictly objective."
-Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley, 1958.
