You may also like Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. There is a movie based on one of his novels 'M. Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Q'uran' with Omar Shariff. I saw the movie and thought it was original [liked it!]. I have not read the book yet, but got his last book 'The Most Beautiful Book in the World' and read a couple of the 8 'novellas' [short stories] and loved them! I'm purposefully delaying reading the rest until I finish other books.
