Lea, you make some very valid points. Yes, there were plot points that were added at the last minute, but somehow, even though they were totally outlandish, they seemed to work. It was a mystery unraveling and after you learn about Dumbledore and his story you understand a great deal more about how he treated Harry. I liked learning that Snape was a good guy, even though at the beginning of the story I thought he had turned to the dark side.

In taking the attention away from the usual MC's I think Rowling created a different atmosphere for the book. We are so involved with these 3 that it is almost like you feel about family. Letting us see how Hermoine was placed in the usual female role you can understand how she might not be so quick to explore new ideas. She does want to help find the horcruxes and is against the exploration for the deathly hallows.

Did you read Stephen King's article in Entertainment Weekly? Go here to read it:

Stephen King loved the book. Of course, he had some comments, but on the whole he likens her to Mark Twain, etc. After all she did create an entire universe of magic and characters we will be talking about for years.

I didn't want to write back when you asked about my thoughts on Harry Potter 7 because I hadn't finished it yet. After finishing it all I can say is I was very satisfied. In fact, it ended as a children's book should, with a happy ending. I never expected that.

During the time I was reading it I wanted to punch Harry a few times and I got sick of Hermoine quite a few times. I was glad to see how she made Ron a stronger character. He was the one who saved Harry's life and it was fitting that he did. I was sorry to see what a life Dumbledore had and how he lived this lie all his life. How sad for his sister who was abused because she couldn't do magic. How awful for her family.

I don't know if JK wanted to bring this in, but a lot of the tensions between the evil factors and the wizards who didn't follow him reminded me of the tensions in the world between governments and terrorists. Voldemort headed a group that basically were terrorists. Yet in many ways the evil Voldemort reminded me too of our government and its insidious scaling away of our democracy piece by piece. The overthrow of the Ministry of Magic and the subsequent loss of freedom entered into this thought process. She might not have meant it this way, but it was so real at times that I had to put the book down.

This is a much darker book than any of the others and at times I couldn't even read about some of the abuse that some of the characters are given. The idea that his name couldn't even be spoken without people being imprisoned and abused is horrible. Yet, it continued for quite some time. If not for Harry and his friends the wizard world would have been overtaken and evil would never have been overcome.

Sorry about the length, but there is so much in this book it would take me forever to discuss it properly.

Hi Lea, 'The Rule of Four' is similar to Da Vinci Code, except better written, although I also found it rather disappointing - probably due to all the hype in the wake of Da Vinci Code.
