I'm not usually a fan of these types of books - which I would describe as mystery/thriller - but I did enjoy this one. I did have a hard time putting it down, following the dual storylines - one set millions of years ago and one set in present times. The science fiction / fantasy portion of the book was well integrated, and covered aspects I wouldn't have thought of otherwise - with great power came great drawbacks as well. Overall I'd recommend this book, especially given the cost :).

Again a book that I enjoyed more than many mainstream books. The author is new, and you can tell in some parts where the writing doesn't quite line up, but the book is edited well otherwise and excellent. My biggest concern was that the author made the main character a bit shallow - most of her depth is put into a lesbian relationship in the book, and I felt that the other areas of her character were underdeveloped or are just added for convenience sake (for example she is able to throw together a business contract after having only military training). This doesn't take too much from the story but I hope it is something which is improved in the next book. Before you take this review as too negative, I did want to note that I couldn't put it down and read it in a single setting, and give it a 4/5.

Wow - I have to say I wasn't expecting such a good book. The mixture of science fiction and fantasy was fantastic, and I have to say the approach made for some interesting scenes - especially as the two intersect and the mage attempts to explain outer space from the vantage of a medieval magic experience. I found it ended quite suddenly, and am hoping for more with the sequel.

An excellent conclusion to the series - though I enjoyed it less than the previous two. Since Shelfari only allows full star ratings, it still gets rounded to 5 stars however (up from 4.5). I enjoyed the ending, though I found at times it was a bit quick and less complex than other books - though higher quality than much YA fiction.

Continuing the story of Katniss in the dystopian future, this book continues to be an excellent YA book, and highly recommended for those who want a more complex story that makes you think.

Excellent book - highly recommended. The writing wasn't as high level as some of my other favorite books, and the main character (Katniss) isn't as deep as you'd sometimes hope - but the storyline is great, and the writing overall reminds me of other young adult fiction books such as Harry Potter. It's also a nice change from other YA fiction (Twilight), being much more complex - set in a dystopian future, with much more moral and philosophical underpinnings than either of the two previously mentioned series. Highly recommended.
