I am a life long reader.
Books are an important asset in my life. I cannot recall a period of time when I did not have one at hand.
When I began reading back in the 1950's the selections available to me did not reflect the urban environment that I lived in. But my family felt that being able to master this particular skill was important and they made sure that there was a steady supply of books available to me.
When the literary market began to publish more books by African Americans and other Black authors, I felt really compelled to read more.
My personal library has a diverse range of literature. I started collecting books that I wanted my children to read while they were growing up.
I am also a fan of Griot Audio Books. I am a multi-tasker and being able to listen to a story while I am busy is a great replacement for television noise in the background. I usually listen to at least five books during the month. The great thing about audio books is the exposure to writers that I might not have personally selected.
Going to the library is a must for me. I live ten minutes away from The Columbus Metropolitan Library. I am usually there at least twice during the week. Once to supply my Head Start class with books and the second time for my own personal reading pleasure.
I spend a lot of time looking in book stores. There is a shop in my neighborhood that I love to browse through on a regular basis. I usually have a stack of books that I am in the process of preparing to read.
Book clubs are not my thing. I find that I am not one of those individuals who does well reading a specific novel. I admit that my reading habits would drive some folks crazy! I might read sections of three different books in one day. Or I will fall into one book and complete it in a short period of time.
I also publish a blog titled:From My Brown Eyed View. I write about politics, education, health and other topics. I am a member of AfroSpear, African American Opinion, She Blogs and other blogging groups.
When I am not reading, I garden, listen to music, watch movies or cook. I love art and photography and I spend time at the museum and the various galleries located in Columbus.
I am now a grandmother to four girls and one boy. So I spend time supply them with books so they will develop a love for reading also.
