I am a high school English teacher in Wisconsin...and have been for 14 years. Before that I taught middle school in Des Moines, Iowa, for a few years. I am happily married to another teacher (at a rival school) whom I grabbed in Iowa, and we have a bunch of busy kids. Life is good!

The books on my shelf are ones that I have read. I will... more »

I heard from a little birdie that you think I may have dropped AP Lang because I am angry at you??? Mrs. N, for what reason would I be angry at you? The reason for my dropping did not have to do with you at all... and I will be taken AP Lang and AP Lit next year...

And if you are wondering, I still have my old shelf... funny thing is, I can't remember which email account and password I used to get it in!

Have a great summer, Mrs. Nickerson. The short time I had with you inspired me to think about sharing English with others, as you do. I never considered becoming an English teacher before this year. Thank you.

Hey there! I see that you have Left to Tell on your shelf. Did I tell you the story about this book? Our school was the site for the world premiere of a one-woman show about Immaculee's story, and Immaculee herself came to the premiere and spoke to the students. We had the whole Upper School in the theater for 2+ hours after lunch on a Friday...a one-woman show...cynical me thought it was a recipe for disaster. I was so wrong. You could have, literally, heard a pin drop. The kids were rapt. The stage was largely empty, except for a rectangle marked in masking tape; this indicated the size of the bathroom in which the women hid. Leslie spent much of her time during the show inside that rectangle, though she also played the priest who hid them and the men with machetes who came to try to find them. It was extraordinary. And as I said, Immaculee came up on stage and spoke to the kids afterwards. You could not meet a more loving, joyful, important soul. What a story. I hope you enjoy the book!

Forgot to tell you what I am currently reading.

The Fountainhead (boring), Tess of the D'urbervilles (amazing), and Little Women (third time I've read it, and I still love it). Classic literature is definitely something I'd like to study in college.

    Thanks for asking!

I don't recall reading about any cheese in Breaking Dawn, but I do agree with you that it was not one of my favorite endings to a saga. I found that Jacob Black's point-of-view was particularly boring...

Wuthering Heights... haven't read that in a while. The Brontes are/were (they are still alive in their writing) amazing. Cynthia is better than Emily, I think.

Hi! College is going great; I've made a really close group of friends in my dorm, so that's been really nice. I'm in all social science type classes right now, so I'm kind of overloaded with reading as it is and don't really have much time for other books. I miss fiction! I hope APE is going well! Have you read any good books lately?

I see you've read The Kite Runner. I read that book just last summer. What do you think of it?

I thought it was absolutely amazing how Hosseini created a true glimpse into the terrors of contemporary Afghanistan while simultaneously weaving together characters who are forced survive during the downfall of a democracy that shapes not only their government, but their lives as well. What I mean is, as the Russians take over their livelihood, they become slaves to one another.

For example, Amir, after witnessing Hassan's assault, feels the burden of the secret he cannot tell, solely for the reason that he knows he could have prevented it. Adversely, Hassan, who knows the terrible thing Amir did, must honor the high stature of his friend and respect his station as a Hazarah and remain faithful to the family.

It was stunning, nearly as good as Jane Eyre or Breakfast of Champions (which I see is not on your shelf...).
