  • Temple Grandin
    • Rated 0 stars

Filled with photographs, diagrams, and interviews, this story of how Temple Grandin developed a sense of herself as a person who is autistic, an animal lover, and someone who has a great deal to contribute. From struggles in school to handling those who believed women had no place working with livestock, this is an inspiring story of overcoming and transforming obstacles into strengths.

  • Gold Rush: Mystery at the Olympic Games
    • Rated 0 stars

Mimicking the fast-paced style of his other sports mysteries, this book is a fine addition to Feinstein's series. This time, Susan Carol is competing as a swimmer in the London Olympics, but will her sleazy agent ruin it all? As a mystery, there are several interesting plot twists but the book takes a long time to get going. Feinstein is heavy handed on the message that money corrupts sports but fans will enjoy the behind-the-scenes adventure.

  • The Magician's Elephant

In DiCamillo's signature haunting style, themes of loss and love are explored in this slender novel. While it would have been nice to explore the large cast of characters in more depth, the writing shines and feels so natural it is as if DiCamillo is retelling a local legend. Fans of The Tiger Rising will enjoy this offering.

  • The Penderwicks on Gardam Street
    • Rated 0 stars

The Penderwicks remind me of the Moffats or the All-of-a-Kind-Family - just a little too sweet to be true. A letter from their mother, who passed four years earlier, sends their absentminded father back into the dating world. Each Penderwick handles this wrinkle in her own way. Meanwhile, there are plays to perform, wilderness to explore, and new neighbors to meet. Despite somewhat predictable plot points and pacing problems. the Penderwicks are still a delightfully quirky family with whom to spend an afternoon.

  • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon
    • Rated 0 stars

Reinventing the tales of her Chinese heritage, Lin crafts a simple story with complex undertones as Minli goes on an adventure to better her family's future. Dynamic characters keep this story from becoming a fairy tale cliche and the plot, while containing predictable fairy tale elements, still has moments of surprise.

  • The Fairy Ring
    • Rated 0 stars

One summer morning seventy years ago, two little girls took pictures of fairies in the woods. Or did they? This book attempts to unravel the mystery of the "Fairy Pictures" that made believers of scientists and statesmen. Following a rapid timeline, the author traces the story that began as a game and spread beyond the imaginings of two very imaginative children.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Bunny--Detectives Extraordinaire!
    • Rated 0 stars

The translation from Bunny may be why this story sputters on so many plot points. As Madeliene engages the services of the newly minted and fedora wearing Mr. and Mrs. Bunny to help find her parents (kidnapped by foxes), there is much to like in this sweet story. The characters seem one-dimensional and the ending falls flat, but the hunt, while it lasts, is enjoyable enough for fans of gentle reads.

  • The Last Dragonslayer
    • Rated 0 stars

Jasper Fforde's writing is a delightful exercise for those readers who enjoy the absurd, the esoteric literary reference, and car chases. Foundling Jennifer Strange has spent her life in indentured servitude caring for a group of wizards as magic leaves the kingdom. She finds she is the last of an ancient line of dragon slayers and may have a chance to preserve - or end- magic in her world.

  • Three Times Lucky

A small town where cell phones don't work. A stranger in town. A girl named Moses washed ashore in a hurricane eleven years earlier. Then, a murder. Filled with quirky characters and narrated by the lively Mo(sea), the pacing makes this an engaging and well-written mystery. Think you know who the murderer is? Think again.

  • Jake And Lily
    • Rated 0 stars

Jake and Lily are brother and sister and they like each other. This may sound unusual, but Jake and Lily are twins who share a special bond. Then, one summer, they begin to grow apart. With deftly drawn characters and alternating points of view, Jerry Spinelli takes a gentle look at growing up while being true to yourself. The prose might not compare to some of his other books, but is true to the voice of the characters. The plot leaves some topics unexplored but concludes with a satisfying and realistic ending.
