I studied English literature at university, but am now working as a dispatcher for the RCMP. My enjoyment of books is purely personal, although I have found that old habits die hard, and so I still find myself analyzing a lot of what I read as I'm doing it. I also write in my spare time (what little I have of it).
My reading interests include (but are certainly not limited to) Canadian Literature (Can Lit), young adult literature, children's literature, fantasy and science fiction (or speculative fiction, as many people have taken to calling it, which suits me just fine), mysteries and detective novels, spirituality and religion (although I own very few books of that nature, preferring to borrow them first to see if I actually like them and want a copy of my own), gardening and herbalism, crafts, Literature (with a capital "L" and tongue firmly in cheek), absurdist writing, dada and surrealism, and historical novels. I am also an avid reader of spy novels and thrillers, and occasionally pick up the odd romance for the entertainment value.
I'm sure there's a ton I'm forgetting. In fact, there is very little that I won't read.
I live at home with my four cats, who enjoy sitting on my books when they're not rubbing against them while I read in order to distract me from the silly paper thing that I'm holding when I ought to be giving them pats. Occasionally they are content to sit and cuddle with me while I read.
I am quirky when it comes to my reading habits. I am one of those awful people who will place her paperbacks facedown on flat surfaces in order to keep her place. I routinely lose bookmarks. I never dog-ear my books, and write comments only in paperbacks and in pencil. Vandalizing a book is the worst crime one can commit short of plagiarism. I read in the bathtub, on public transit, and before going to bed. I always have at least one book in my purse, usually between two and five, just in case I'm stuck waiting somewhere. I read quickly, and so the odds are good that I will finish a book and then be stuck with nothing to do while I wait.
I like having uniform-looking bookshelves. Woe betide the publisher who changes the look of a series halfway through! If I start a series by buying them hardcover, I will continue buying them in hardcover. The same goes for paperback, which means that I have often chewed my fingers while waiting for a new book to come out in paperback.
That's my reading profile in a (rather large) nutshell.
