What makes a romance a “timeless” romance?

To me, it is an enduring love story that makes you believe it continues loooong after you close the book. It is a love story that you want to read again and again, because the characters and the tale of their journey to “happily ever after” fill you with a sense that TRUE LOVE can happen, because no one could write about it so vividly if it didn’t.

A “timeless” romance is one that you certainly hope will be around forever, so all the generations ahead of you can read it, and feel that same incredible feeling you felt when you read it. It’s a romance you wish you could send a copy of to every romance reader in the world, and say, “Look here…THIS is romance!”

In FORBIDDEN we discover that there is a treasure which is greater than even life itself, and that treasure is LOVE. Think about it…wouldn’t you give your very life if it was necessary, for those you love?

FORBIDDEN is another of my all-time favorite romances. Amber is very cautious about who she allows to be close to her, and so are the people who love her. Everyone is forbidden to touch her. Duncan is a man who must discover his past although doing so may very well crush those he loves in the present, and has the power to destroy the future.

Revisiting with characters from UNTAMED in this book was nice, too. I enjoyed seeing that Dominic and Meg’s life continued on outside their own book.

For me, the thing that makes FORBIDDEN a “timeless romance” is the way it shows throughout the story that love is greater than even living, because what is life without love?

ENCHANTED is another “keeper shelf” favorite of mine. In it, Ariane’s betrayal makes her unwilling and unable to trust a man, and Simon’s refusal to believe in things intangible push both characters all the way to the edge of “forever lost” in a most heart-rending way. In ENCHANTED, our deep-seated fear of losing that which we hold most dear is tugged, with a warning. You may not see it, but it “is” there. Don’t be foolish. Once it’s gone, it’s gone and you can’t get it back. Do not be one who doesn’t realize, until it is far too late, what they have. For me, the thing that makes ENCHANTED a “timeless romance” is this very message. Don’t push what you have aside. Grab hold of it, and live it NOW. Tomorrow may be too late.

In UNTAMED, we can see that there is something greater, far greater than the grandest magic, something truly all-powerful that no sorcerer or practitioner of any art can duplicate, yet it lies inside us all. Something that has the power to save lives, mend hearts, soothe souls. That something is love.

UNTAMED is one of my all-time favorite romances. Lord Dominic is a man whose past has burned all ability to love from him, but to gain the sons his soul craves, he must learn to love the Glendruid healer, Lady Margaret of Blackthorne.

The characters, Meg and Dominic, Simon, even Black Tom the cat are so well drawn I’ve felt as if these characters were somehow once “real people” that existed somewhere in the fabric of time…that still exist and will continue to live on throughout eternity because of the strength of their love–a love that is ageless, timeless, neverending.

They are like good friends with whom we struggled for a time for survival and shared in the triumph of their love in the end.

For me, the thing that makes UNTAMED a “timeless romance” is that this is a story in which the very survival and continuation of every character in the story hinges, ultimately, on love.
