Amy - Book reviews on http://pagesofdiscovery.blogspot.com.

I'm a 32-year-old homeschool mom, writer, and Christian. I love to read, write, and watch movies. I'm a pretty unconventional, fun-loving, kind of girl. I consider myself to be laid back and very thankful for the life I lead.

As far as writing and reading go, I prefer Fantasy over all other genres. I love the adventure and... more »

Yeah, I've seen that episode too. Andrew Zimmerman will eat anything. Normal people don't go around eating iguana, at least none that I know. Most of the food was pretty standard street food though (things people actually eat on a regular basis), especially the Doubles (I think he ate that, but can't remember) and the Bake and Shark. He said it was the best sandwich he ever ate or something like that. He's not wrong - it really is that good. It's funny that they call the bread 'Bake' even though it's fried. I think I'm hungry now.

Anyway, surfing's not a huge deal in Trinidad - it's more of a Tobago thing - but it's still done. It's always hot in Trinidad no matter what, even when it's pouring rain. I think we're pretty close to the Equator.

Hey, The Alchemist sounds cool. I've been meaning to read that for a while now actually. And yes, I do still live in Trinidad - always have and probably always will. I doubt I'd fit in anywhere else in the world, but then again, I've only ever been to Florida and New York. The only other Caribbean island I've been to is Tobago, and that doesn't count because we're the same country (2 islands, 1 country). It's a 15 minute plane ride. I think my parents took me to Caracas, Venezuela when I was a baby, though.

Oh, and about the high school thing... It's like the British system, 7 years from age 11/12 to 17/18 (just like Hogwarts). Basically, instead of OWL's, we have C.X.C. (Caribbean Examination Council) or the British O'Levels, and instead of NEWT's, we have C.A.P.E. (still not sure what that stands for) or the British A'Levels. It starts from Form 1 to Form 5 and then Lower 6 & Upper 6. I guess they don't like how Form 7 sounds.

Isn't it funny how HP can help explain things. So what's your book about?

POTE is a really superb novel. It's 1000 pages long and you'll be left wanting more after finishing it. Strangely enough, it's about building a cathedral. The stories in and outside the cathedral are the best parts. There's a lot of descripion about the structure of the cathedral but bear with it, I was interested because I've never been in a cathedral before. You'll definitely fall in love with a few characters and despise like hell others. The character development is excellent. It's set in the middle ages in the 12th century where evil masadochistic earls and power-hungry priors rule. Power-politics in the church , true love, the double-crossing(that was seriously great) all intertwined in one epic novel. There are three sets of charaters actually, but their lives intertwine to form big group, the evil ones trying to destroy the innocent ones lives and the innocent ones trying their best to fight their evil rulers. The twists and conflicts in the plot are fiendishly ingenious. It's a great book, the characters will linger in your minds for months afterwards, you have to read it.

Thanks for the advice again. That's my rule too. The book's always better than the movie anyway. I'd rather not talk about my book too much since it's still in the early stages, but I dabble into some Caribbean (specifically Trinidadian) folklore. There's also a forest involved and the main characters' ages range from 15 to 4. Not much help, I know...

What got me into writing though is hard to tell. I think I always wanted to write a book. It's just one of those things. If there's one thing I could do, it would be to write a book. For some people, it might be to invent something or cure a disease, but for me, it's writing.

The book that got me into fantasy might be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was the first book I had to study in English Lit in high school when I was 11, but I remember loving Alice in Wonderland way before that. It was HP that made me take writing (& reading) fantasy seriously though.

Got to go now. I'm trying to be all disciplined and get in at least 1500 words a day. Later.

My fave book besides HP would be Pillars of the Earth by Ken follet. Now I'm reading it's seguel, Worl Without End, but ..I dunno, I still like the first one. THe book is 1000+ pages, I haven't even reached a quarter, so I'll reserve my judgement for later. My second fav author is Roald Dahl, who doesn't like his stories?

Hey, thanks for accepting my friend request. I guess nothing will ever beat HP in my eyes, but I also love Narnia, LOTR, Artemis Fowl, and I just managed to squeeze in some time to read Paolini's Brisingr. It was great and very revealing, but anyway, I'm still on the fence about Twilight. I need an authoritative opinion here, so as an avid HP fan, why do you like Twilight, and why should I read it? I love Mugglenet.com, btw.

so have you been to jkr's official website? I gave up on trying to solve the puzzles myself, so I cheated (i'm ashamed of it, but I had to, my exams were coming up,I had to solve everything). This fantastic HP site, it had all the solutions, but I did do some by myself.

    Hey Amy
I was reading one of your posts about....
"I've read The Alchemyst and the sequal, The Magician, and really liked both. They are totally fun and easy to read. " I'm going to check it out but your "fun and easy to read" --- is EXACTLY what my husband's book is like so I thought I would bring it up to you.

Here is a recent review.."I recommend this book for any fan of fantasy. It's an extremely fun read with a fast-moving plot and interesting & likable characters. It's NOT the usual cookie-cutter fantasy but instead offers a fresh perspective. " -- Heather G, Falls Church, VA (Amazon Reviewer)
