People are defined by what they do. Reading is one of those things that I do. When I was young I would read anything that I came across, these days I m a bit more particular, but I still love to read just as much as ever. Much of my spare time is spent at the library, and though usually in the company of my children, it is still my quiet space, my place where I can go and be something more than just a mom.
My favorite genre is probably fantasy for the pure escapism of it, but I also love to read historical fiction, the classics, modern literature, and non-fiction. I also have a deep love for the stream of conciousness technique. My current favorite authors include Kate Walbert, Jasper Fforde, and for reading with/to the kids Roald Dahl. My top five books, in no particular order, are
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce,
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolfe,
A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert,
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith.
My rating system is quite subjective. You ll find very few 1 or 2 star books on my shelf. Even if I do not like a book I have a hard time giving a book that low a rating. You ll also find that I equally share out my higher ratings between Serious Works of Literature, non-fiction, and pure entertainment reads. That doesn t mean I think that the are comparable; it simply means that the impact those books imparted was similar, despite their differences and how I related to them.
