Hey Linda, I saw you had "Water for Elephants" on your shelf. What's it like? Is it a good read?
Cool! Take your time - no rush.
Greetings Shelfari friend!Haven't chatted yet.How are things with you?Read anything good recently?I'm now on my 91st book so far this year!Hope all is well...
Linda, I wanted to followup on your note of a couple of days ago. You asked if I knew of any groups on Shelfari where you could dive into the classics. While I am sure that there are many more here, I belong to several groups where this is the primary emphasis. The three that I am most involved in accept members 'by invitation,' but looking at your bookshelf and your stated passion for all things books, I shouldn't think that a problem at all. So, have a look at the following: (1) Anglophiles Anonymous (a group for all of the great literature of England); (2) The Victorian Pantheon (all literature of the Victorian); and (3) Brilliant Babes (and Dudes) Who Read Selectively. If any of these groups look at all interesting to you, do let me know, and I'll put in a good word with 'management' on your behalf. Personally, I think you'd be a credit to any or all of 'em! Have a great day! Cheers! ChrisBy the way, I noticed that you read E.O. Wilson's "The Diversity of Life." That was a monumental book for me. I read it like three times in a row. I think it as important a book as Darwin's "Origin of Species," and should be required reading in high schools and colleges around the world!
Thanks for the very thorough descriptions! I guess I need to not write something off just because it's written for young adults. I totally enjoyed the Harry Potter series and the Twilight series, but I really thought they were the exception, not the rule, as far as being "challenging" enough reading for adults, too. I'm glad I was wrong!
Hey, Linda! When you get a chance, can you tell me about Suzanne Collins and Rick Riordan? Thanks!
Linda, thanks for your kind words about my review of Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell." It was a helluva book, wasn't it? I have heard (can't recall where) that she is working on a sequel. You can sure see the influence of her friendship with Neil Gaiman in her writing (or, is it she who's influencing Gaiman ;-). By the bye, I notice that you like the writing of Stephen Jay Gould. I am a geologist, and he has always been one of the giants in my profession, and a marvelous writer. Anyway, I am delighted to make your acquaintance here, and look forward to sharing our love of books. Have a wonderful day, Linda! Cheers! Chris
Little Things ~Julia A. Carney Little drops of water,Little drains of sand,Make the mighty oceanAnd the beauteous land. And the little moments,Humble though they be,Make the mighty agesOf eternity. So our little errorsLead the soul away,From the paths of virtueInto sin to stray.Little deeds of kindness,Little words of love,Make our earth an Eden,Like the heaven above.
So, are you enjoying the Dark Tower series? Drawing of the Three was my favorite of all the books. I still haven't decided if I liked the series or not - I have very mixed feelings. Please share your thoughts as you're reading - I would love to know what you think.
Hey, Linda! How are you liking Dexter?
Thanks! It's me and a terpulid. They're squishy. So far, so good. They're no Highlander series, but something to listen to in the car. I'll let you know what I think of them.Miss you!
I'm watching Castle right now, and he is dressed for Halloween as Mal!! Woo hoo!!!!
So great to find another Firefly fan!! I truly believe it was one of the greatest shows of all time - BRILLIANT writing. So many quotables!!! And I agree, Joss did a great job of wrapping it all up in Serenity, but I did hate one part (and I'm sure you know what part that was).
Well, Nardina expressed interest - she said she loves the show and had been wanting to read the books. I haven't seen the show, but I had downloaded a sample of Darkly Dreaming Dexter on my Kindle a few months ago and loved the sample so much I immediately downloaded the whole book. But I never started it. Haven't heard anything from Andrea yet, but Jeannie said she'd be interested.
Hey, Linda! Have you read any of the Dexter books?
Are you on Ravelry?! If you crochet, and plan on knitting, you will LOVE the site!! It's a social networking site for knitters and crocheters. And it has lots of very active groups, and they cover all subjects, not just fiber arts. If you decide to join, look me up - I'm bettagirl on there.
Thanks for the thorough reply! You should be professional book reviewer! I will definitely go on with the Outlander series, and I will definitely try the Morning books! It's so hard to answer the question as to what my favorite series is - there are so many. And my range is very broad. I have been very, very impressed with the Harry Potter series. What I expected to be "brain candy" due to the appeal to children turned out to be one of the most engrossing stories I've ever been pulled into! I absolutely loved it, and am still sad that it's over. I feel like I've lost some very dear friends! I enjoyed the Twilight series, but it definitely wasn't what I'd call "deep," and that's okay sometimes. I am a knitter, so I am enjoying the Maggie Sefton series, but that probably woudn't appeal to non-fiber fanatics. I have enjoyed the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz - Odd is very lovable. There are several series that I am starting that I'm sure will end up being some of my favorites - they are: Outlander, Eragon, Temperance Brennan, the Dresden files, etc. Ah, so many books, so little time!!!! Thanks for the info on the other sites - I'll definitely look you up on Facebook!
Hey, Linda. I decided to move our discussion of other books off the Squints page. First of all, don't take my word for it on the Dark Tower series - it seems most everyone who has read them absolutely loves them. I think I just missed something, and I am actually asking questions on the Dark Tower group to try to find out what I missed! Years ago I read Outlander, and LOVED it. For some reason, I never picked up the second book. Ironically enough, I've been thinking about re-reading the first book and then going on with the series. So, it's your favorite, huh? That says a lot, because it seems you've read a lot of books!
Hi, Linda. Welcome to Shelfari! I'm pretty new here, myself, but I wanted to let you know about a group that I started with a friend. We call ourselves the Armchair Squints and the first book we're reading is Kathy Reich's first, Deja Dead. I see that you have read that as well, so feel free to stop by and add your comments. We would love to hear from someone that has already read it. Soon, we hope to start the Sookie Stackhouse series. I see you enjoyed those, as did I.
