The books on my shelf do not include those owned by any of my former or current wives & girlfriends (This added only because so many female Shelfarians seem to mention excluding books on their husbands' / boyfriends' bookshelves -- I'm guessing it's an indirect attempt to discourage unsolicited attention from male bookworms.).

  • The Omnivore's Dilemma

Without a doubt, this is one of the most important books I've ever read. Pollan is an excellent writer but it's the content of his work that primarily affected me. I had no idea American agriculture was in such a shambles. Already, less than a week after reading the book, I've made significant changes to my diet. The information in this book explains why so many Americans are fat and undernourished at the same time. Do not read this book if you do not want to know what you're really eating.

This book is destined to become a classic. Now that I've read it for it's surface story, I need to re-read it for it's deeper meanings. Until then, it's good to know that the tiger within can be controlled, even under the worst of circumstances.

I, too, agree with Benjamin. The movie conveyed nowhere near the detail or suspense of the book. But such is usually the case anyway, which is why books will always be written.

  • Jupiter's Travels

A friend loaned me this book shortly after I bought my motorcycle several years ago. I flew through the book as it was about three things I love: travel, other cultures and motorcycling. When I finished the book, I bought a copy for myself. Then I learned the author had just embarked on his second trip around the work, this time on a BMW instead of a Triumph. So I followed his journey online. Ted Simon has another book: Riding High, which is also about his exploits while traveling via motorcycle. But "Jupiter's Travels" is the one to read.

If you're interested in what an intense battle is like, read this. Decorations received included one Congressional Medal of Honor (posthumous), two Distinguished Service Crosses, 21 Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars with "V". Also, read "Team Sargeant" which is a first person account of the battle.

This is the story of Capt. Roger H.C. Donlon, the Green Beret who received the first Medal of Honor in Vietnam. The book's foreward is written by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

A children's classic. Getting sleepy was never so easy.
