"All that can be done is for each one of us to invent our own ideal library of our classics; and I would say that one half of it should consist of books we have read that have meant something for us, and the other half of books which we intend to read and which we suppose might mean something to us. We should also leave a section of empty spaces... more »

Glad you liked Swimmer, Marc. Many of Cheever's dysfunctional stories haunt me, but Swimmer blew me away.

    EEEkk 54,

Remind me not to copy quotes or write messages when I am wearing my contact lenses w/out reading glasses.I meant to quote as follows-

"Although this man refers to his account as a "story," there is not a trace of fiction in it. Each assertion has been verified by hundreds of records and observations.

In short, this is a book about a person who fought with the tenacity of the damned to recover the use of his damaged brain.Though in many respects he remained as helpless as before,in the long run he won his fight."

Hope you, as well as your family are doing A.O.K.:)

    Hi 54,

In certain ways I am envious of you-Your father resigned himself? My mother almost never "resigns" herself-she'll fight to the death-and take you down with her-if need be.As of now I am reading "The History Of A Brain Wound-The Man With A Shattered World" by Luria Here is an excerpt-"Although this man refers to his account as a "story," there is not a trace of fiction in it.Each assertion has been verified by hundreds of records and assertions.

In short, this is a book about a person who fought with the tenacity of the damned to recover the use of his damaged brain.Though in many respects he remained as helpless as before,in the long run he won his fight."

My mother also has head injury from falls.

    Hi 54,
I just wanted to apologize for my self involved way too long post on BTS. I like to write and once I get going I find it difficult to stop.My mom this-my mom that-I can get tiresome. Guess what? Up discovered the author Oliver Sacks on NPR today. There is a phone # on the NPR site-talks about music therapy and how it helps with a vast variety of differences-from stroke/movement disorders to aphasia! Thank you for opening up about your father. I'm definitely going to write the music therapy ph. # on my wall. :) As for you and your father categorizing instruction manuals-I've read that people who categorize have superior memories,as well as people who speak out loud to themselves.I'll send you a message about the aphasia book ASAP.I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future 54:)

i could have sworn I responded to your note a few weeks' ago! Brain like a sieve right now, but grades are all filed now. More importantly, though, I scored a copy of Habibi last night when we went to the local comics shop. Must read the most recent trade of The Walking Dead and the newest Marjane Satrapi, The Sigh, before straining my wrists. But SOOOO looking forward to it. Thanks for the recommendation!

I would definitely read anything by her, so I'll keep my eyes and ears open for more news on that one. Geek Love was so... I find it hard to describe how much it moved me. I loved it so much.

I didn't know Craig Thompson had a new book out! Thanks for telling me, & thanks for thinking of me for a surprise. I'm going to pop over to Amazon as soon as I hit 'post' and put a copy in my shopping cart. The semester is rolling along all too quickly--for a change. I haven't been reading much of anything but installments in the current round of Francophilia; I'm not sure where I'm heading, but a colleague and I have been talking about a possible course. Who knows? I will say this, it's all pretty darn repetitive. But it does divert one from the day's news. . . How are things with you, my friend?

Oh by the way...I just finished Game of Thrones. The HBO series follows the book extremely closely. Enjoyed both the book and the TV series a lot. Are you still reading it?

There hasn't been a great deal of discussion yet, but there are several knowledgable people on there who have made some interesting points. It's now or never...LOL. My summer project, I guess.

After watching the first two episodes of the HBO series, I spotted my husband's copy of Game of Thrones on a shelf and decided to read it before we got too much further along in the show. I gobbled it up. We're reading the second one together, aloud, about a chapter a night, which means it will take us f o r e v e r to finish it, since it's hefty, if not weighty. So far, they make for great escape. What did you think of the first yarn?

There must be an element of truth in successful fiction. If it does not appear realistic then the writing seems and is unreal . In my case I try to to mislead, yes, but hopefully leave the the reader with the impression that there a strong possibility that it could well have happened just as he first thought it would. Both endings are possible

RE: Game of Thrones...no I haven't read it, but I'm interested in starting it at some point this summer I think. Had never heard of it until the TV series came up.
