I have eclectic reading tastes ranging from science fiction to murder mysteries to non-fiction books on most subjects. I am enjoying returning to reading after hiatus due to family, work and the reduced travelling time I had.

The books on my shelf are ones I have read since June 2007. If I have included an older book, it is because I... more »

Was not sure if I would be able to handle the written side of this genre (I generally enjoy this sort of thing on TV). Instead I get roped in very quickly and have demolished the book in about 3-4 days, which is fairly fast paced for me, reading for pleasure is something that I generally squeeze in rather than have dedicated time. The introduction of the 4 leading ladies was gradual and timed well with the story. The story had a number of twists.

Strange book, that didn't make any real sense (although it is obvious that the works and structure were chosen) until the last 15-20 pages. Think I would need to read a few times to truly understand it.

Definitely glad it is now in the "read" category, cause although I knew the broad plot I didn't know the details.

I found the book rather slow in the beginning, and there are a lot of characters that you encounter through the book. Not sure if there are as many as War and Peace, but certainly a lot more than most books.

The book develops rather like a stone rolling down a snowy hill, like in the cartoon strips, picking up more speed and interest as you progress through the dialogue. As my first Gaiman, not including when he teamed up with Pratchett, it was very enjoyable and even at times funny.

I would be hesitant to recommend this book to people unless I knew that they would a) stay the course and b) get the book. It is not your typical take on gods interacting with people or well a typical take on gods in general.

Very disappointing story, filled in my opinion with lots of bloat. The plot just doesn't work for me, with too many machinations, etc. This one I put down to Dan's bad book, since the other 2 I have read so far, and the 3rd I have started all seem to have the pace, right level of details and nuance, etc that Dan's books are renowned for.

I ended up reading the book like I usually do Mills & Boon styled romance novels, the beginning, the end and skipping through large chunks in the middle.

Had some twists and turns I was unable to predict more than a few pages/passages before being unveiled. Lots of techno-babble (cryptographic) words and concepts but most are explained well enough to follow the storyline.

Set at the National Security Agency's campus, Fort Meade as well as in Spain, a story revolving around the cryptographic holy grail and its impact on intelligence around the world. Book is fast paced and well written.

Having read other books in this series, I was a little disappointed in the narrative. It felt drawn out and I think probably better addressed with the 2 couples being in separate books. Her other books in this series flow a lot better.

That said, the book is a good starting place for the overall world that she has set up and covers a LOT of ground in setting up the world and some of the interactions between the countries within the world and a solid introduction to the on-going references to characters and events in later books. I would add a 1/2 star to the book if shelfari allowed it.

This is the second of the Lost Continent Books I have read and am really interested in reading more. Romance, Magic, Faith and Gods - sounds more like a Terry Pratchett novel I know, but really it is a gem in it's own right with lots going on within the depth of the realms.

The interweavings of Houses Harkonnen, Corrino and Atreides, along with the Bene Gesserits and others picks up momentum in this the second installment of the Prequel Trilogy leading up to the events in "Dune".

The Harkonnens and others show just how ruthless they are, we have almost all of the players from Dune introduced and now we are seeing the machinations sprawling over a period of 50 or more years preceding the events in "Dune".

Why Black writes compelling arguments, there is an underlying bias based on the fact that Black's mother is a holocaust survivor. I do believe that there was complicity by both governments and corporations alike, and that this does need to be brought to light. However the writing reminds me of some of the cartoons that have huge neon arrows pointing to a doorway of a trap - it is TOO laid out, too slick in presenting the argument, and in both books I have read of his (IBM and the holocaust), the discussion favours too heavily on the Jews and not equally on all of the other groups of people that were considered "undesirables" to the Third Reich. This book does include more references to them, however the bulk focuses too much on the Jews and the hatred of people within the Management and ownership of some of the biggest corporations within The United States of America.

The facts of the holocaust and the complicity of the corporations would be more compelling if the information was presented more unbiased towards ALL of the victims and included other companies from around the world, not just those of the United States.

This is the third book in "The Invisible Ring" sub-series of books, it concludes the story started in "The Shadow Queen". Once again Anne's writing shows depth as does her characters, including The Kindred, who are The Blood Animals of Kaeleer. Seeing the interaction of Scelties with the humans and how the Scelties adopt people and then their interactions as well as some of the other Kindred who come to back up the Scelties is worth it's weight in Gold.
