I have eclectic reading tastes ranging from science fiction to murder mysteries to non-fiction books on most subjects. I am enjoying returning to reading after hiatus due to family, work and the reduced travelling time I had.

The books on my shelf are ones I have read since June 2007. If I have included an older book, it is because I... more »

The book has the main character as a very self-centred brat, it resembles nothing like the movie of the same title. After watching the movie, I must say the book was a great disappointment

Interesting premise relating to time travel and the potential for a new tourist industry. Bouncing between 2 locations in the present and 1 location in the past and the interactions of the the past and the present was well handled and virtually seamless. Crichton once again has done a good job of researching science and drawing together the science of now, the possibilities of tomorrow and a well thought out story all together.

  • Thebes of the Hundred Gates

    by Robert Silverberg
    • Rated 2 stars

While it was an easy read, I was quite disappointed in this Novella. For one of the "big" names for a few decades in the Science Fiction / Fantasy genre, this was mediocre at best.

Silverberg managed to make Thebes in 18th Dynasty Egypt as exciting as watching paint dry. This book certainly doesn't send me to the library shelves or the book store to explore more of his writings.

  • The science of secrecy: The secret history of codes and codebreaking / [Simon Singh]
    • Rated 3 stars

Takes a journey through the history of ciphers, cryptography and cryptoanalysis. It was written before the events of 11 September 2001, so it is somewhat dated in it's referencing to events and politicians in the "now", the internet and it's developments.

It is a useful place to start as it gives a nice overview without presuming any previous knowledge of ciphers, etc and there is very little in the way of bogging down in the details of each development described. A good introductory book, that also relates to a BBC production.

As usual Anne does a superb job of writing an inter-laced story using old and new characters within the Black Jewel Realm. This one continues "The Invisible Ring" storyline as well as the Daemon, Jaenelle, Saetan and Lucivar on-going development of their characters and dynamics.

Anne adds a depth to her characters that I have rarely experienced from writers, especially when they are revisited again and again. It shows the quality of her writing and the time she spends developing her stories - they are certainly not rushed to print like some of the more prolific writers out there.

Well done Anne and I look forward to more of your books.

    The Ghost (Alias series)

by J. J. Abrams, Brian Studler
    • Rated 3 stars

I have read a number of the ALIAS Tie-in novels and while the book captured a lot of the character nuiances, it seemed to not as flowing as the other books I have read for this series.

I also question the marketing of these books to teens/young adults - while the language, etc is appropriate to the target audience, the subject matter and the show is not. I would like to see some of these Tie-ins aimed at the audience that the show is aimed at.

Overall not the best ALIAS tie-in, but interesting none the less.

  • IBM and the Holocaust: The Strategic Alliance Between Nazi Germany and America's Most Powerful Corporation
    • Rated 3 stars

I found the book and interesting if biased account of how IBM aided in the Holocaust. The reason for the bias is stated in the introductory section by the author himself, stating he was going to find out IBMs role in the Holocaust, and the fact that the others types of people that were considered undesireables by the Nazi Regime are mentioned in almost cursory manner.

I am not denying that 6 Million plus Jews lost there lives, however there were a lot of other classes of people that were also targeted to the same level as the Jews. Honestly based on the information given in this book, the identification of all of these undesireables would have been able to be identified and excluded from the population that Hitler and his inner circle wanted for not only Germany, but all of Europe, and most likely over time for all of the globe.

This for me was one of those eye-opening, life changing books because of the whole concept of the book, censorship of the masses for the betterment of society. When you combine that with the really awesome predictions on how television would play out in society, especially with advent of reality television of the last decade, you really do need to appreciate an author who saw so far in the future. He is up there with HG Wells and co for futuristic predictions while still writing an enjoyable novel.

Another well written book in the Harry Potter series. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of these books, and will be enjoying introducing them to my children when they are older.

Definitely a well written book. A good climax to the series. The only disappointment I had was the epilogue. I would really love if JK Rowling decided to write more books in this universe, but will accept that it is her universe and that the ultimate decision really comes from her and her characters.
