  • The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner

In the beginning of her sophomore novel, The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner, by Andrea Smith you will be saying to yourself "heck when does it get better", however I urge you to press on it's well worth it. During your adventure with the author you will catch a glimpse of "Baby Moses Law", genuine sisterhood, friendships, growth, relationships and southern church folk wrapped together in what makes this book a 5 on my list of 2006 reads.
The story begins in South Carolina almost fifty years ago, however the premise comes straight from current events of today. This is not just a feel good book for women I believe it should be shared and read across genders. Andrea Smith weaves a compelling and heartwarming story that will catch you off guard, so don't sleep on these characters, your relationships or your community.

This author has put together a book that will have you rolling with laughter, and smiling with her characters.

  • The First Lady
    • Rated 3 stars

While reading this book I felt like I was watching a slow version of the (1972) dating game with a twist; they brought characters from the future (2007). The concept or storyline of this book was over sized I couldn't understand why a woman with a childhood history such as the First lady would want to control her husband' life from the grave, and the bigger question is why would another individual help her.

In my opinion this story was unbelieveable for many reasons, the old characters from The Preachers Son & new characters were a little over the top. I am not saying these people do not exist someplace but c'mon Anita; married with her own life is running around throughout the story leaving letters taped to the doors of their recipient? When would one women have time to be in 3 or 4 different women and 1 man' life at one time. Then make periodic trips to visit the First Lady' grave and report how successful/unsuccessful her letters have effected lives?

Were we really supposed to believe the scene when Lisa & Loretta visited the bishop' house and spiked Marlene's tea and then left a crack vial in her bathroom? Then when the bishop comes in she does not immediately decipher that it was those two who left it? Baby please!

Mr. Weber has spun more than a tale of drama in The First Lady. One good thing about the book is it's short. Had it not been for Monique' character and my book club chossing it as a monthly I might have skipped this book altogether.

  • Wild Stars Seeking Midnight Suns: Stories
    • Rated 5 stars

    J. California is one author who truly knows how to "speak to my heart" with her stories. This collections of short stories are built on relationships, healings, self esteem and a host of other humanistic emotions. In "As Time Goes By" Futila dreams of having everything she wants, only to wake up and discover that everything she wants CANNOT cure an empty heart. Lily Bea in "Eye of the Beholder" lives for her very own definition of freedom. In the same way stars seek the comfort of the sun the characters in these shorts was seeking the same satisfaction.
