  • Little Ghetto Girl: A Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

Sister Souljah watch out Danielle Santiago is the NEW kid on the block. I meet this author at the HBF (Harlem Book Festival) in umm what 2002 I believe her book wasn't even bound then. Mine is spiraled with a light blue cover and I love it. Now the cover showcases a sister in pink fur.

In her debut novel Danielle really knows her game and shows she can hang with the best of' em. The protagonist Kisa Kane was truly a diva of sorts but she was smart as all get out.

Little Ghetto Girl tells the story of how at the ripe age of 21she is a self made women. She began by selling weed in school, and then graduating to cocaine.

We get a look at Sincere the man in her life and their relationship and the love they share. Under the street lights of this tale there is true relational love between man, women and family. You will also find true to the game drama.

  • Walk Like a Man
    • Rated 5 stars

I know someone will say "that's your opinion", after reading my review and you know what you are right. To you I say "opinions are like noses, everyone has one and they usually have 2 holes in it" (smile) But that is what a review is MY opinion of a book.

The ten stories in Walk Like A Man told stories of women who consider themselves lesbians. Stories of how some of us love, live and regard relationships and our lovers. Each story takes on a life of its own and depcits lesbians of several different walks of life "Not all" as I have read some reviewers say.

The stories are based on the erotic side of relationships and a few will have you sitting on the edge of your seat squeezing your thighs together tightly.

A couple of characters I've meet off the pages of Walk Like a Man while others were not developed enough for me to know or like. All in all the book was a good read about us.

    Con:
Walk Like a Man unfortunately doesn't showcase a transgendered womyn or a stone butch. I am hopping "Strapped" does but looking at the cover once again we have what looks like a stud but a womyn who embraces her feminity. A womyn we meet in the first story of Walk Like A Man (Mo)

I am waiting for this author to write a character who doesn't have this contrast but embraces her masculinity with NO identity problems.

  • Kings The True Story of Chicago's Policy Kings and Numbers Racketeers
    • Rated 5 stars

I have only had the opportunity to skim this book. However from what I have read thus far ti is a must read. Mr. Thompson has put so much history in this five hundred page book that should not be missed by any African American.

  • Triple Take: A Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

An exciting ride through the underworld of Chicago of unexpected revenge.

I thought this was going to be just another Urban fiction. However it was far from JUST another story about street life. I was truly surprised by the gripping way the author holds his reader as well as build characters that you LOVE to hate and hate to love.

  • Friendship Cake: A Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

Every avid reader should taste a slice of "Friendship Cake". This was one of the best books I read in 2002 I was right there in Hope Springs CC in North Carolina with the characters.
Imagine the women of your church creating a cook book together. On the committee there's Margaret, whose wisdom makes her the community Moses and confident; Louise, nursing the love of her life through Alzheimer's, another woman who doesn't return those feeling in kind; Beatrice, with a finger in everyone else's cake; Jessie, the only black woman in this all-white congregation; and of course Reverend Stewart, Hope Springs Community Church first woman preacher.

Read how these women bond through food and laughter. I guarantee you will be laughing, crying and having a good ole time with them.

  • Am I My Sister's Keeper?

    Am I My Sister's Keeper?

    by S. Stephens
    • Rated 5 stars

We like to believe that we don't impact the lives of others. However with each person we meet we leave fingerprints. Those fingerprints we leave on people can either encourage or discourage their actions. They can be good fingerprints with good results or bad fingerprint which can make you spiral out of control.

That was the case for Elise and her younger sister who was touched by Elise but the fingerprints she received were smudged and consquently Elise had to rethink her touch. An excellent book and an excellent time to write it - Way to go Ms Stephens.

  • In Her Shoes MovieTie-in: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

A reviewer here mentioned this book was trash and to be honest I might have to re-read this one because I don't remember it as a trashy novel.

I had a good time with Maggie & Rose the two sisters which this novel is based upon. They have nothing in common except their shoe size. They are as different as sweet and sour; Maggie is simple and has a free spirit attitude while Rose oh Rose is a strait laced attorney.

Their differences reach a climax and the sisters fall out and lose contact for awhile. What brings them together again not only caused me to cry but it also made me laugh. Jennifer Weiner did a wonderful job telling this sister story. It was truly worth the time I spent reading it. If you haven't read Good in Bed by the same author try it I enjoyed that one also.
