I think it is very worth reading, if only for the better understanding of the history and sociology of the region. The detail is fascinating, it flows like a novel, and the author has the narrator's voice down cold. I enjoyed it immensely, but I have to warn you that a friend's husband, a former Stanford English major, found it too depressing and quit part-way through.
Colbert's book is excellent. unfortunately, I left it in storage in NC and I was only halfway through it!I was at the library today looking for books. the branch nearby is very nice, but has a rather limited collection. looks like all the good stuff is at the central branch. rarg.Jeopardy! is on now.
hello! I haven't been on here for a long time because I've been reading one book very slowly. but now I'm done and I'm having fun on the site. I thought I'd say hello! also, I am trying to decide what to read next.
Welcome to Better than Starbucks! Look around, make yourself at home, start a new thread or dig up an old one or just read and jump in on the more active ones.
Re: Pledged--I thought it was reasonably entertaining, it was just soooo long that it started to wear out its welcome near the end for me. But as someone who's so completely removed from that whole lifestyle, it was interesting to see the walls peeled back. If you're curious you should check it out.
I'll have to try Stiff. I was fascinated and inspired by the way Michelangelo used disinterred corpses to improve his art (as read in Stone's The Agony and the Ecstasy when I was in my late teens-if you haven't read it and are in the mood for a biographical fiction, I recommend it).
