“Final Review:
I have finally completed the book “Safe Haven” by Nicolas Sparks. This book, like many of Nicolas Sparks novels is very well written. “Safe Haven” is a very thrilling love story. I found the book to be a very quick and easy read. Although there were a few aspects of the book that I disliked it was very enjoyable. Like previously mentioned in my comments, the book also largely revolves around Katie and her abusive husband. In my two previous comments I focused mainly on Alex and Kevin. However Katie, the main character is also a very interesting character. She managed to escape her husband and chose to give up an easier life for one in which she struggles to find enough scraps to survive on. Katie, although she does not seem like it, is very intelligent. She was capable of escaping a cop and managed to erase all her tracks so he would not be able to find her again. Although when first arriving in South Port she tried to avoid people as much as possible she slowly managed to trust Alex. He introduced her to his two young children who also managed to find their way into her heart. By the end of the story we learn that Katie would be willing to do anything for them, even risk her own life. She had developed the same protective instinct over the children that any mother would have. However Katie was sometimes also a very confusing character that could be a bit frustrating. What made me the most frustrated was that she had no real plans for her own future. She was a character that was stuck in the past. It would often go on for pages about her dwelling about her previous life, rather than describing what her next step was. She had no desire to do anything big with her life. She went to a café for a job straight away rather than returning to college to receive a degree and have a better job.
The ending of the book is very strange and has little relation to the rest of the book. Although I found most of the book very easy to believe the ending ruined it for me. Nicolas Sparks tosses a curve ball at you for the ending and it ruined the book for me, by making it very unbelievable. Although the ending is very frustrating, I am very glad I read the book. It was a very enjoyable book and hard to put down while reading it.
Comment 2: I am currently on page 226 of “Safe Haven” by Nicolas Sparks. The book becomes more and more exhilarating as it progresses. Not only do we learn more about Katie, but we are also given passages of Kevin’s life without Katie. Like stated in my previous comment Kevin is Katie’s abusive husband. So far I find this book very realistic because we can hear about cases of domestic abuse on a day-to-day basis. It is often extremely hard however for women to escape this kind of abuse, as they often believe their husbands will never do it again. This books main focus is the struggles through which Katie must go to overcome this physically and emotional. Nicolas Sparks also allows us to view the perspective of Kevin. Kevin is overcome with anger that his wife would leave him yet also terribly lonely and filled with longing towards her. Kevin does everything in his power to try and find Katie. We can see a strong internal conflict within Kevin as he debates to kill her or never to harm her again when he finds her. This internal conflict allows Kevin to become a more realistic character. However his dark and twisted thoughts of rage make it hard to sympathize with him for having lost the one thing that mattered most to him. This book is extremely interesting and very exciting.
Comment #1:
I am currently on page 105 of the book “Safe Haven” by Nicolas Sparks. “Safe Haven” is a book about a woman named Katie who runs away from her abusive husband and finds sanctuary in a small town named Southport. There she meets plenty of new people, amongst them Alex. Alex is a father of two children who lost his wife to a brain tumor a couple of years ago. He also happens to be my favorite character in the book as he is so open and kind to everyone. It seems that he never has a negative opinion on someone and he always tries to see the best in people. I like that he treated Katie very well and that he gave her space until she felt comfortable around him. He is also extremely smart as he used to work in the military and he knows that Katie was abused before she even admits it. This has been an amazing book so far and I very much enjoy reading it.”
