  • A Day Late and a Dollar Short
    • Rated 4 stars

I have only read a few Terry McMillan books, but this one restored my interest. The main matriarch carried the reader along with a humor and familarity that made you feel welcome in her crazy world. I laughed out loud and learned the things she learned or I would have been a day late and a dollar short.

  • Jubilee
    • Rated 4 stars

When Oprah Winfrey spoke at my high school in Oak Park, IL, I, like my classmates, could careless. We were more interested in catching up on the latest school gossip. It wasn't until Oprah was concluding her remarks and cited a passage from Jubilee that made me take notice. She quoted the character Randall Ware. I quickly recognized the quote and blurted out "That's from Jubilee." I knew because I had just read it that summer and written another book report for my mother. It paid off, because Oprah and I shared the same taste in books. :-)

  • Native Son
    • Rated 5 stars

Native Son was one of the very first novels I read as a student in high school. It was also the first book report I wrote assigned by my mother! I wasn't happy about it until I read the the book. I scoffed at the number of pages, but read each page with no complaints. Bigger's life is the stuff college literature classes are made of. The literary and life themes in this book were ahead of their time. It is an all-time classic read.

  • The Joy Luck Club

Wonderful story about Asian and Asian-American life. Tan portrays a community of Asian women who resemble many women in our families. Their humor, love, attitudes, and mistakes help us to understand all communities of women.

  • Eat Right for Your Type
    • Rated 4 stars

My aunt, who was a doctor at the time, recommended this book to me, because I mentioned becoming a strict vegetarian. I learned what foods aid or hinder my blood type. The book provided the history of blood types based on race and even gave recipes in the back.

  • My Soul to Keep
    • Rated 4 stars

I was skeptical about this book at first. It was my first book that explored a mysterious almost sci-fi like topic, but I was hooked. I was rooting for David and Jessica and quiet as it's kept I still liked David at the end. My Soul to Keep is good reading.

  • Sula

I read Sula in college and never forgot it. Sula Peace is a "bad" woman. She and Nel provide a story like none other. They make this book unforgettable and a real classic.

  • Your Best Life Now
    • Rated 5 stars

A life changing book full of encouragement, realism, and faith. I learned how to ask for favor, peace, protection, and provisions everyday from Osteen's teachings, and the importance of living a life of integrity. He writes with a friendliness that makes you feel like he is your friend and understands what you are going through. I highly recommend this book for everyone struggling to live their best life now.

  • Casting the First Stone [ CASTING THE FIRST STONE BY Roby, Kimberla Lawson ( Author ) Jan-01-2001
    • Rated 5 stars

Let me go on record and say "I strongly dislike, Curtis," and it's Roby's fault. She created a character that needs more than a stone casted at him. Sadly, characters like Curtis are all too common and Roby makes us know it. She makes us symphatize with all who have the misfortune to be a part of his conniving world. "Casting the First Stone" is just an early example of Roby's success at writing fiction.

  • Perfect Peace
    • Rated 4 stars

You're not going to believe the story that Black tells in this drama. From the very beginning you learn the horrific secret, but it doesn't matter because you have to keep reading to understand the psychology and psychosis behind it. You are moved, disgusted, ashamed, and vengeful all at the same time and yet you don't want to stop reading. I didn't quite understand the rationale behind the "karma," but karma it is.
